The Phillies have signed free agent RHP Wil Crowe to a minor league contract and added him to the Reading roster. Crowe was the 2017 2nd round draft selection of the Washington Nationals out of the University of South Carolina. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates on 12/24/20 along with RHP Eddy Yean for first baseman Josh Bell.
Crowe pitched in 94 major league games from 2020 to 2023 with the Nationals and Pirates. He made 25 starts for Pittsburgh in 2021 and appeared in 60 games (59 in relief) in 2022 posting four saves in ten chances. He only appeared in five major league games in 2023 but made 17 appearances in the minors.
Crowe headed to Korea in 2024 signing a contract with the Kia Tigers but underwent surgery in May of last year on his elbow for UCL damage (abbreviated Tommy John surgery - he had an internal brace put in place which isn’t a full ligament replacement - recovery time for this type of surgery is often less than a year - the Braves Spencer Strider had same procedure). It was his second TJ surgery as he also had the full procedure in his sophomore year in college. He hasn’t pitched in a game since the surgery but has now recovered to a point to be able to take the mound once more.
When he’s right he throws a mid nineties four seamer, slider, change up and sweeper. He’s thirty years old. From a fan’s view welcome to the organization Wil!
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
