5/21/24 : Minor League Roundup

International League ( AAA ) - Lehigh Valley (17-27) Rochester (22-21) - doubleheader

Allentown, PA - Coca-Cola Park


Game One : Rochester 4 Lehigh Valley 1 - seven innings


Summary :


11 AM start.


David Dahl homered in the first inning.


Two walks, a sacrifice bunt and a single scored two runs for Rochester in the third inning.


Two doubles and a single scored two runs for Rochester in the fifth inning.


At Bat : 1 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K’s


David Dahl had two hits (single & HR).


On The Hill : 4 R, 6 H, 8 BB, 3 K’s (ABS system called balls & strikes)


Michael Mercado went three innings, 2 R - 1 earned, 3 H, 4 BB, 1 K - 69 pitches - 37 strikes.  Eury Ramos pitched two innings, 0 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 1 K - 28 pitches - 12 strikes.  Beau Burrows went two innings - 2 R, 3 H,  1 BB, 1 K -  30 pitches - 20 strikes.


Game Two :  Lehigh Valley 16 Rochester 3 - seven innings


Summary :


David Dahl tripled in the first inning, he scored on a double by Jordan Luplow.  Weston Wilson singled to score Luplow.  Cal Stevenson walked, Matt Kroon doubled to score Wilson.  Esteban Quiroz singled to score Stevenson and Kroon.


Weston Wilson walked in the third inning, he was forced out at second on a grounder on which Cal Stevenson reached base.  Stevenson stole second and scored on a double by Matt Kroon.  Aramis Garcia singled, Esteban Quiroz hit a three run home run.


David Dahl, Jordan Luplow and Weston Wilson singled in the 4th inning. Cal Stevenson hit a grand slam home run.


James Wood hit a two run home run for Rochester in the 4th inning.


A walk, single and ground out scored a run for Rochester in the 5th.


Esteban Quiroz and Nick Podkul walked in the 7th and scored on a three home run by Jordan Luplow.


At Bat : 16 R, 15 H, 5 BB, 6 K’s


Every batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit. Jordan Luplow (single, double & HR - 4 RBIs).  Weston Wilson (two singles), David Dahl (single & triple), Matt Kroon (two doubles) and Esteban Quiroz (single & HR - 5 RBIs) each had two hits.  Nick Podkul doubled.  Cal Stevenson hit a grand slam home run.

Tyler Phillips pitched his second consecutive seven inning complete game - 3 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K’s - he’s the second pitcher in IronPigs franchise history to do so.

Cal Stevenson now leads the team in OBP thanks to a solid week in Norfolk and general good play of late. Since May 7, Stevenson has slashed .414/.550/.690 with five doubles, a homer, 4 RBI, and 10 walks to six strikeouts. He had four straight multi-hit games last week in Norfolk (5/15-5/18) before going hitless on Sunday, ending a six-game hitting streak. - Media Notes


Eastern League ( AA ) - Binghamton 6 (21-17) Reading 5 (17-23)

Summary :


11 AM start.


Binghamton scored a first inning run on a hit batter, single and sacrifice fly.   Two doubles and a single scored two runs for them in the third inning.  A single and double scored a run in the fourth.


José Rodríguez homered in the bottom of the fourth.


Kendall Simmons and Casey Martin each homered in the fifth inning.


A walk, stolen base, fielding error and sacrifice fly scored a run for Binghamton in the 7th.


Marcus Lee Sang walked in the 8th, José Rodríguez doubled.  A ground out  by Caleb Ricketts scored Lee Sang.  A sacrifice fly by Carson Taylor scored  Rodriguez.


A hit batter, walk, passed ball and sacrifice fly scored a run for Binghamton in the 9th.


On The Hill : 6 R, 7 H, 6 BB, 2 K’s


Efrain Contreras started and went four innings - 4 R - 3 earned, 6 H, 2 BB, 1 K. Carlos Francisco pitched two scoreless and hitless innings - 1 BB, 0 K’s.  Tristan Garnett pitched an inning - 1 unearned R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K.  Zach Haake pitched an inning - 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s.  Tyler McKay pitched an inning - 1 unearned R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s.


At Bat : 5 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 11 K’s


José Rodríguez (double & HR) and Caleb Ricketts (single & double) each had two hits. Kendall Simmons and Casey Martin homered.

Reading has played much better baseball on Tuesday-Thursday, as opposed to Friday-Sunday games. Reading is 9-7 in the first three days of the week, and just 8-15 during the weekend games. Also, Reading is 15-1 in games this season when scoring over five runs, and just 2-21 when failing to score five runs. The Fightin Phils have also done a great job of holding leads late in games. Reading is 14-0 when leading after the seventh inning and 13-0 when on top after eight. - Media Notes


South Atlantic League ( High A )  - Jersey Shore 9 (23-17) Aberdeen 6 (20-20)

Aberdeen, MD - Leidos Stadium at Ripken Field


Summary :


Hendry Mendez doubled in the 5th inning and scored on a single by Zach Arnold.  A double play grounder cleared the bases but  Erick Brito singled with two outs, Justin Crawford walked and Otto Kemp singled to score Brito.  Leandro Pineda singled to score Crawford.


Mac Horvath hit a two run home run for Aberdeen in the 5th inning.


Zach Arnold singled in the 6th and scored on a two run home run by Jordan Dissin.


A triple and sacrifice fly scored a run for Aberdeen in the 6th. Two walks and a double scored two more. A throwing error by shortstop Erick Brito allowed another run to score.


With two outs in the ninth Felix Reyes doubled, Cade Fergus pinch ran for him.  William Bergolla walked, Hendry Mendez singled to score Fergus.  Zach Arnold singled to score Bergolla. Jordan Dissin was hit by a pitch.  Erick Brito hit a ground rule double to score two runs.


On The Hill : 6 R - 5 earned, 8 H, 6 BB, 4 K’s


Jean Cabrera pitched 5.2 innings - 5 R, 7 H, 5 BB, 3 K’s - 95 pitches - 54 strikes.  Trey Dillard pitched 1/3 of an inning - 1 unearned R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s - two inherited runners scored - 15 pitches - 9 strikes.  Danny Wilkinson pitched a perfect inning - 1 K - 9 pitches - 6 strikes.  Mason Ronan pitched an inning - 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s - 13 pitches - 6 strikes. Gunner Mayer pitched a perfect ninth inning to close it out - two ground outs and a fly out - 11 pitches - 8 strikes.


At Bat : 9 R, 14 H, 6 BB, 9 K’s


Zach Arnold (singles) and Erick Brito (two singles & double) each had three hits and two RBIs.  Hendry Mendez (single & double), Leandro Pineda (two singles) and Jordan Dissin (single & HR) each had two hits.  Felix Reyes doubled.  Otto Kemp singled and walked twice.

Erick Brito had an RBI triple last Tuesday, and he hit his first home run of the year on May 9th. It was

his first home run in 358 days (since May 16, 2023 with Clearwater vs Bradenton).  Brito now has four career home

runs. He is 23-78 since starting the season 0-7 and already has six multi-hit games on the year. The 21 year old (he’ll

turn 22 on May 25th) split last year between the BlueClaws and Clearwater, hitting a combined .238 with 29 stolen bases. - Media Notes

Summary :


Trent Farquhar singled to lead off the game, stole second and scored on a double by Aidan Miller.  Luis Caicuto and Keaton Anthony walked.   Bryson Ware singled to score Miller.


Keaton Anthony singled in the third inning, stole second and scored on a single by Nikau Pouaka-Grego.


St Lucie scored two runs in the 7th inning on two singles, a double and a wild pitch.


Devin Saltiban walked in the 8th, went to second on a passed ball, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bryson Ware.


A walk, hit batter, single and two throwing errors on stolen bases (catcher Luis Caicuto) scored three runs for St Lucie in the 8th inning.


On The Hill : 5 R - 3 earned, 5 H, 1 BB, 8 K’s - (ABS system called balls & strikes)


Micah Ottenbreit was excellent - 7 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 HB, 0 BB, 6 K’s - 79 pitches - 54 strikes.  He threw shutout baseball thru the first six innings allowing just one walk.   Josh Bortka pitched an inning - 3 R - 1 earned, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s - 25 pitches - 12 strikes.


At Bat : 4 R, 8 H, 7 BB, 7 K’s


Bryson Ware had two hits (singles) and two RBIs.   Aidan Miller doubled.

The Clearwater Threshers began the six-game set with the St. Lucie Mets leading the Florida State League in more ways than one. They stand two games clear of the Lakeland Flying Tigers at the top of the FSL West and have league leaders in multiple categories. No full-season minor league team has a better win percentage than the Threshers, who lead the minors with a .692 winning percentage. Statistically, there are several Threshers on the leaderboards across multiple statistical categories in the Florida State League. Mavis Graves and Casey Steward are in a four-way tie across the wins leaderboard with four and Saul Teran begins the week with a league-leading seven saves. The Threshers have three of the top four (Trent Farquhar, Keaton Anthony, Aidan Miller) league leaders in on-base percentage, and Trent Farquhar leads in walks and is second behind Miller in OPS. 5/21/24 : FCL Blue Jays (3-10) FCL Phillies (7-6) - double header

Dunedin, FL, TD Bank Stadium


Game One : FCL Phillies 7 FCL Blue Jays 2 - seven innings


Summary :


10 AM start - played in Blue Jays ST stadium.


Manolfi Jimenez singled in the fourth inning, went to third on a single by Leonardo Rondon and scored on a sacrifice fly by Diego Gonzalez.   Rondon stole second base and scored on a single by AJ Shaver.


Three singles and a wild pitch scored two Blue Jays runs in the bottom of the fourth.


Starlyn Caba walked to lead off the 5th inning, Aroon Escobar and Guillermo Rosario singled to score Caba.  Manolfi Jimenez walked, a wild pitch scored Escobar.  Leonardo Rondon singled to score Rosario.  Ezra Farmer singled to score Jimenez.  AJ Shaver was hit by a pitch, a wild pitch scored Rondon.


On The Hill : 2 R, 4 H, 5 BB, 5 K’s


Pedro Reyes started and went four innings, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s.  Juan Amarante pitched three scoreless and hitless innings - 4 BB, 2 K’s.


At Bat :


Ezra Farmer, Guillermo Rosario, Manolfi Jimenez and Leonardo Rondon each had two hits (all singles).


Game Two : - FCL Phillies 7 FCL Blue Jays 2 - seven innings


Summary :


Jerffson Pena led off the second inning with a home run.  Juan Villavicencio singled, Junior Marin hit a two run home run.


Three walks, a wild pitch and single scored two runs for the Blue Jays in the fifth inning.


Nolan Beltran and Leonardo Rondon walked in the fifth, Eduardo Tait grounded into a force out however a throwing error on the play allowed Beltran to score.


Jerffson Pena reached on a two base fielding error in the 6th inning, he scored on a single by Juan Villavicencio. Junior Marin singled, a wild pitch move both runners into scoring position.  Yemal Flores singled to score two runs.


On The Hill : 2 R, 3 H, 5 BB, 6 K’s


Luis Gonzalez pitched four scoreless innings - 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s.   Alexis De La Cruz pitched 2/3 of an inning, 2 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 0 K’s.  Luis Avila pitched two innings - 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s.


At Bat : 7 R, 9 H, 3 BB, 4 K’s


Juan Villavicencio had three hits, Junior Marin had two hits (single & HR). Jerffson Pena hit a home run.  Eduardo Tait doubled.   Leonardo Rondon walked twice.


5/20/24 : FCL Tigers 8 (9-3) FCL Phillies 6 (5-6)


Summary :


The Phillies loaded the bases on walks in the third inning, a balk scored AJ Shaver.


Jerffson Peña walked in the 4th, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a fielders choice/fielding error.


The Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the 4th on a fielding error, two walks and four singles.  They added one in the 5th on a double, fielding error and sacrifice fly.


The Tigers scored four runs two runs in the 6th on a single, two walks and a passed ball.  One more scored in the 7th on a walk, single and groundout.


Starlyn Caba walked to begin the 9th inning, Aroon Escobar singled, Eduardo Tait walked.  A balk scored a run and advanced the other two base runners.   Rickardo Perez hit a three run home run.


On The Hill : 8 R, 10 H, 8 BB, 8 K’s


Danyony Pulido pitched 4 innings, 4 R - 2 earned,  7 H, 2 BB, 6 K’s.  Kleyderve Andrade pitched an inning - 1 unearned run on

1 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s.  Jonh Henriquez went 2/3 of an inning - 2 R - 1 earned,  1 H, 2 BB, 1 K.  Adilson Peralta pitched 2.1 innings - 1 R, 1 H, 4 BB, 1 K.


At Bat : 6 R, 5 H, 8 BB, 8 K’s


Rickardo Perez hit a three run home run.  AJ Shaver walked twice and stole two bases. Starlyn Caba walked twice.

Lehigh Valley : Rafael Marchan’s major league rehab assignment has been transferred to Lehigh Valley from Clearwater.


Jersey Shore : Troy Schreffler reinstated from the 7-day IL. Bryan Rincon placed on the 7-day IL (retroactive to 5/20).


FCL Phillies : RHP Jonh Henriquez (High-A Jersey Shore 60-day IL) beginning a minor league rehab assignment.  LHP Angel Liranzo transferred from the 7-day IL to the 60-day IL (retroactive to 5/13)
