5/4/22 : Matinee Game - Jersey Shore

South Atlantic League ( High A ) - Jersey Shore 5 ( 8-14 ) Hudson Valley 0 ( 12-11 )

Lakewood, NJ - Shoretown Ballpark

Summary :

Jared Carr walked in the second inning, stole second base and scored on an infield single by Nicolas Torres.

Casey Martin hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Nick Matera hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Johan Rojas doubled in the seventh inning and subsequently scored on a throwing error.

Nick Matera tripled to center field to lead off the 8th inning, he could have scored as the HV center fielder erroneously put his hands up thinking there was a ground rule for the ball being stuck under the fence - there isn’t 🤫, Nick stopped at third though and then scored on a single by Carlos De La Cruz.

On The Hill :

RH Victor Vargas - 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s - 75 pitches - 49 strikes - was outstanding - mixed pitches and location - vintage Vargas - we’ve seen the 21 year old master the zone before and today he was definitely on. Uses primarily a three pitch mix changing speeds and locations - a Maddux like approach. He can pitch like an artist - fun to watch.

LH Erubiel Armenta - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s - 27 pitches - 28 strikes - FB was in the 94-96 range today and mixed a change up and slider. Erubiel likes to alter his release point, sometimes he’s on top and others he will sling from three quarters - when it works it’s deceptive but also can be a hindrance with command. The 22 year old has swing and miss stuff as shown today along with an ability to hide the ball regardless of the release point he uses. At one point I thought he was tipping the changeup but today I believe it’s just a change of release that he does intentionally - wasn’t consistent with what I thought was a tip. Really like this kid’s capabilities - from my view perhaps consistency in repeating release may allow better command.

RH Aidan Anderson - 1 perfect IP - 1 K - 15 pitches - 10 strikes used primarily off speed deliveries in mid 80’s but also sat 93-94 with the FB.

RH Dominic Pipkin - 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K - was 95-99 mph with his FB - pitched out of a bases loaded jam with a punch out and 5-4-3 double play grounder to end the game.

At Bat : 9 H, 2 BB, 12 K’s

Nick Matera tripled and homered. Casey Martin homered. Johan Rojas doubled. Every Blue Claw batter reached base in the game.

Notes :

The game started at 11:05 AM - there were multiple schools who brought kids to the game as a planned outing. When we lived up north I really enjoyed the morning games - both Reading and Lehigh Valley does them also. It also allowed me to focus on one game instead of watching four at the same time 👍😎.

Casey Martin was excellent defensively at shortstop.

Catcher Nick Matera is truly a field general behind the dish, he’s great to have with this staff as he continually provides guidance and direction - is solid as a receiver also. I think he can definitely play at higher levels but for now is serving a great role and purpose with the Blue Claws.
