5/6/23 : Minor League Roundup


International League ( AAA ) - Lehigh Valley (16-15) Syracuse (15-17) - Doubleheader - 7 inning games

Syracuse, NY - NBT Bank Stadium


Game One : Lehigh Valley 5 Syracuse 1


Summary :


DJ Stewart hit a home run for Syracuse in the second inning.


Jake Cave and Weston Wilson singled in the fourth inning, Cave scored on a single by Simon Muzziotti.


In the 6th inning Jim Haley was hit by a pitch, Jake Cave singled and Weston Wilson walked to load the bases.  Simon Muzziotti singled to score a run. Dustin Peterson hit a sac fly to score another.  Jordan Qsar tripled to score two runs.


On the Hill :


TJ Zeuch pitched a complete game (seven IP, 1 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 1 K - 94 pitches - 55 strikes.


At the Bat :


Jake Cave and Simon Muzziotti each had two hits.  Jordan Qsar tripled.  Muzziotti and Qsar each had two RBIs.



Game Two :  Lehigh Valley 4 Syracuse 0


Summary :


In the first inning Esteban Quiroz walked and Jim Haley singled, they executed a double steal with Quiroz scoring. Weston Wilson and Jordan Qsar walked, Jhailyn Ortiz hit a sac fly to score Haley.


Scott Kingery hit a two run home run in the sixth inning.


On the Hill :


Jake Jewell opened and pitched an inning allowing one hit.  Ben Bowden went two innings allowing just a walk striking out three. McKinley Moore struck out the side in the fourth inning allowing only a walk.  Jakob Hernandez threw a perfect inning with one strikeout.  Yunior Marte closed it out with two perfect innings with two strikeouts.  They held Syracuse to just one hit, a single, in the contest


At the Bat :


Scott Kingery had two hits (single & HR).

Jhailyn Ortiz came off the development list on 4/18 and made an instant impact on 4/19. The Phillies no. 18 prospect went 3-4 with a two-run homer that was recorded at 117 MPH.  That ranks sixth in the entirety of recorded batted ball events this

Eastern League ( AA) -  Reading 14 (10-15) Hartford 12 (12-12)

Hartford, CT - Dunkin’ Park


Summary :


Grant Lavigne and Kyle Datres hit back to back home runs for Hartford in the second inning.


Back to back doubles by Cody Roberts and Garrett Whitley scored a run for Reading in the third inning. After advancing to third base on a ground out Whitley scored on a fielders choice on which Carlos De La Cruz reached base. Johan Rojas hit a two run home run to right field.


Zac Veen doubled in the third inning to score two runs (runners reached on a single & walk) for Hartford.  Veen scored on a single by Kyle Datres.


Zac Veen tripled to score a run for Hartford in the fourth inning.


Ethan Wilson singled in the fifth and scored on a home run by Matt Kroon.


The tallest guy gets it - a sky high pop up just beyond the plate was hit by Warming Bernabel in the bottom of the fifth, no Reading fielder seemed to see it so pitcher Braden Zarbnisky went to get it, 6’8” first baseman Carlos De La Cruz bumped Braden out of the way to catch it instead, Zarbnisky was grinning ear to ear 🤓.


Johan Rojas singled in the sixth, went to third on a double by Ethan Wilson and scored on a sac fly by Matt Kroon. Nick Podkul hit a sac fly to score Wilson.


Hartford scored a run in the bottom of the 6th on a walk, single and ground out.


Reading loaded the bases in the seventh on a hit batter and two walks, Matt Kroon singled to score two runs.


Nick Podkul singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Garrett Whitley.


Warming Bernabel doubled for Hartford in the 8th inning, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out.  Zac Veen was called out on a pitch clock violation by the home plate umpire but he then reversed his call which prompted a “discussion” after which both Reading Manager Al Pedrique and Pitching Coach Brad Bergensen were ejected.  A walk and hit batter was followed by a double by Hunter Goodman to score two more runs.


Reading loaded the bases in the ninth on two walks and a single (Carlos De La Cruz).  Oliver Dunn tripled to the right field corner to score three runs!


Hartford loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th with two outs on a strikeout/wild pitch, hit batter and walk. Zac Veen singled to score two runs. The game mercifully ended when Hunter Goodman popped out 😳.


On the Hill :


Reading used six pitchers in the slug fest.  Braden Zarbnisky pitched the best going 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief including stranding an inherited runner.


At the Bat : 17 hits, 6 walks


Cody Roberts had three hits (two singles & double) as did Matt Kroon (two singles & HR).  Johan Rojas, Carlos De La Cruz,  Garrett Whitley, Ethan Wilson and Nick Podkul each had two hits.  Whitley and Wilson doubled. Johan Rojas homered.  Kroon had five RBIs.  Rojas walked twice. Oliver Dunn tripled and had three RBIs.  Every batter in the lineup reached base at least once.

Ethan Wilson had three hits and five RBI last night, including his third home run in four games. Since coming off the IL on Apr 22, Wilson is hitting .381 with five home runs and 18 RBI. Summary :


Marcus Lee Sang led off the game with a single, stole second, went to third on a fly out and scored on a balk.


A walk, double (Alejandro Osuna) and sac fly scored a first inning run for Hickory.


Anthony Quirion singled, Nick Ward walked and Rixon Wingrove singled to load the bases in the second inning, Troy Schreffler hit a sac fly to score a run.


Nick Ward singled in the fourth and scored on a home run by Rixon Wingrove.


Marcus Lee Sang homered in the 5th inning.


Casey Martin homered in the seventh inning. Hao Yu Lee doubled, he scored on a home run by Kendall Simmons.


Marcus Lee Sang walked in the ninth inning and scored on Kendall Simmons second home run of the game. Leandro Pineda doubled, Anthony Quirion singled, they both scored on Rixon Wingrove’s second home run of the game!


On the Hill :


Rafael Marcano started and went four innings, one run scored on four hits and three walks, he struck out four batters.  Carlos Betancourt was excellent in relief going three scoreless frames allowing just a walk and striking out four batters.  Sam Jacobsak pitched a perfect 8th inning.  Cam Wynne struck out two batters in a scoreless 9th inning.


At the Bat :


Rixon Wingrove had three hits.  Kendall Simmons and Rixon Wingrove each hit two home runs, Simmons had four RBIs, Wingrove drove in five.  Marcus Lee Sang, Casey Martin and Anthony Quirion each had two hits.  Hao Yu Lee and Leandro Pineda doubled.  Lee Sang and Casey Martin each homered.   Everyone in the lineup reached base at least once, the team had 14 hits and 4 walks.

Summary :


Justin Crawford singled in the first inning and scored on a double by Caleb Ricketts.  Gabriel Rincones Jr singled sending Ricketts to third base, Chad Castillo hit a sac fly to score Ricketts.


Dom Johnson doubled for Lakeland in the third inning, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a single by Luke Gold.


Jordan Viars walked and Otto Kemp singled in the 5th inning, they scored on a double by Justin Crawford.  Caleb Ricketts singled to score Crawford.


Lakeland scored a run in the sixth on a single, double (Peyton Graham) and a sac fly.


Two singles and an RBI double by Manuel Sequera scored two runs for Lakeland in the eighth inning.   Dom Johnson singled to score Sequera.


In the bottom of the 10th Emaarion Boyd put down a bunt to move placed runner Freylin Minyety to third base. He reached base as well.  Boyd stole second base, Justin Crawford was walked to load the bases.  Caleb Ricketts reached on a fielders choice as Minyety scored on a throwing error by the Lakeland first baseman!  Third consecutive walk-off win!  Twelfth straight victory!


On the Hill :


Alex McFarlane had a very strong outing going five innings allowing one run on three hits, he walked none and struck out seven batters, Alex was 95 to 99 mph with his fastballs and also threw sliders, cutters and changeups. Jack Dallas went 2 1/3 scoreless in relief albeit one inherited runner did score.


At the Bat :


Justin Crawford and Caleb Ricketts had two hits, both doubled and posted two RBIs. Bryan Rincon doubled.

Ten pitchers threw a side bullpen session, pitchers who threw today - Drew Garrett, Noah Song, Konnor Ash, Jose Acuna, Jhordany Mezquita, Daniel Harper, Mavis Graves, Jonathan Petit, Seth Nightingale and Josh Bortka.


Enrique Segura threw a live BP session.


Dominican Training Center Spring Training Games :


5/5/23 : Tigers2 5 Phillies White 4


Leny Carela and Angel Mata each had two knocks including a double and RBI.  Starlyn Caba and Jorge Julio each singled, the team had six hits in total. Luis Avila, Angel Liranzo, Cristian Diaz, Eduardo Fernandez and Alexis De La Cruz each threw a scoreless inning.  Avila and De La Cruz each struck out two batters.


5/5/23 : Phillies Red 7 Marlins 4


Brahian Silva had two hits including a double and RBI. Jarol Martinez and Eduardo Tait each doubled.  Renair Manrique had a single, two RBIs and a walk. Ramon Reyes, Luis Martinez and Claudio Gatier each threw a scoreless inning.
