6/20/22 : Minor League Roundup - Short Season Teams

Written by Steve Potter

Florida Complex League :

@ Carpenter Complex - Clearwater,FL

Phillies 5 ( 7-4 ) Tigers 2 ( 1-10 )

Summary :

Ricardo Rosario walked and scored on a triple hit off the center field batting eye by Jordan Viars. Rickardo Perez singled to score Viars.

Ricardo Rosario bunted for a base hit in the bottom of the third, he advanced to third on a single by Jordan Viars. Viars stole second base. They both scored on a single by Ricardo Perez.

Starlyn Castillo was very good today, best I’ve seen him this year. Fastball had alot of life and movement and slider was swing and miss deceptive - good vertical break.

The Tigers scored twice in the seventh inning after a brief weather delay - Abel Bastidas & Jesus Bolivar each singled, they advanced on a passed ball. Bastidas then scored on a wild pitch. JD McLaughlin singled to score Bolivar.

Jesibert Sevilla walked in the bottom of the seventh, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Ricardo Rosario.

On the Mound :

RH Starlyn Castillo - 4 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 6 K’s - really enjoy watching him pitch - is very animated

RH Wilson Valdez - 1 perfect IP - 1 K - got his first win as a pitcher today - was sharp - got last batter on slider

RH Giuseppe Velasquez - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 K - good pop on fastball

RH Estibenzon Jimenez - 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s - faced two hitters then weather delay ended outing

RH Malik Binns - 1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s - 1 inherited runner scored

LH Sergio Sanchez - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s - 1st save

At the Plate : 11 H, 3 BB, 6 K’s

Jordan Viars had a day going 3 for 3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. He’s got very quick hands, today had better balance and barreled the ball consistently. He’s fun to watch, no plays off for this young fella. Ricardo Rosario had two hits including a slug bunt single towards second base that he beat out. First time we’ve seen him, first impressions are that he’s very fast. Lou Helmig had two hits ( double & triple ) - both pulled - triple to right center and double down the line - he’s got a quick bat as well.

Defensive Gem :

Catcher Oscar Gonzalez gunned two runners out at second trying to steal - have always been impressed with his arm and pop times. Don’t know where he stands on the depth chart defensively but gotta believe he grades high.
