6/22/21 : Today in Extended Spring Training (XST )

The Phillies XST team played the Yankees today in a seven inning noon contest on Ashburn Field at Carpenter Complex. I took up my spot in the shade down the right field line behind the fences.

Was great to see RHP Tom Sutera ( 24 yr old signed 7/27/18 as amateur free agent - Sienna - pitched at Lakewood in 2019 ) on the mound as he continues his way back from the IL to activation. Tom started and went one inning, he yielded two runs on two hits and a sac fly … struck out the last two batters he faced.

Another young hurler on the way back from the IL pitched next … RH Gunner Mayer ( 20 yr old 2019 5th round draft choice - San Joaquin Delta Junior College - was Threshers opening day starter this season - put on IL 5/12/21 ) went three scoreless innings allowing just two singles and a walk, he struck out three batters. LH Anton Kutnesov ( 23 yrs old - signed 9/8/16 from Moscow, Russia - pitched for Williamsport in 2019 ) pitched the final three innings … 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s.

The Phillies were held to two hits … singles by DH Jadiel Sanchez ( 20 yrs old - 2019 12th round draft choice - Puerto Rico - played in GCL 2019 ) and 2B Uziel Viloria ( 19 yrs old - signed 7/1/19 - Domincan Republic - played 2019 in the DSL ). They scored a run in the 3rd inning on a sacrifice fly by 1B Oscar Gonzalez ( 20 yrs old - signed 7/2/17 - Venezuela - played 2018 & 2019 - DSL ) that scored 3B Kervin Pichardo ( 19 yrs old - signed 6/24/19 - played 2019 in DSL ) who had reached on a walk and went to third base on an errant throw by the pitcher attempting to pick him off first base.

The Yankees won the contest 3-1.

Defensive alignment for the Phillies …. C Chris Burke, 1B Oscar Gonzalez, 2B Uziel Viloria, SS Jamari Baylor, 3B Kervin Pichardo, LF Leandro Pineda, CF Jefferson Encarnacion & RF Felix Reyes. Arturo De Freitas pinch hit in the seventh inning and Jadiel Sanchez led off as the DH.

The fellas have a camp day tomorrow then travel to Dunedin to face the Blue Jays on Thursday.
