6/4/21 : A draft comparison

A historical look at Phillies drafts - a comparison of the different eras of scouting directors from Mike Arbuckle to Brian Barber ... just the data. It’s only data, there are no miracles 🤓.

I found this quote in a Philadelphia Inquirer article when Mr Arbuckle announced his retirement from baseball last year ... interesting.

“I learned a lot immediately from Paul Owens,” Arbuckle said. “My first two years I used Pope as a sounding board for so many things, and I learned so much. One of the things Pope told me was not to worry about the rounds they come from as long as you give your general manager a player-and-a-half every year for his big-league club. He told me if I do that, I’d be doing my job. I had never quantified it in that way, but that became the standard I worked from to judge myself.”

So ... I’m gonna quantify it in those standards 🤓

Scouting Directors draft classes :

Mike Arbuckle - 1992 to 2000

Marty Wolever - 2001 to 2014 ... Arbuckle was Asst. GM - Scouting/Player Development from 2001 to 2008 ... Wolever was Scouting Director from ‘01 to ‘14

Johny Almaraz - 2015 to 2019

Brian Barber - 2020

Here’s a review by each year’s draft ... reflects the number of picks, how many signed, how many reached the major leagues ( regardless of length of time and how many other draft picks reached the upper levels of minor league baseball ( AAA & AA ). I used the Baseball Cube as my research data base ... rather than retype all of the data here I’ve only provided names of those who made it to the show ... if ya want further details please go to Baseball Cube ... it’s all there.
