7/16/23 : Week Fifteen Minor League Review (7/10 to 7/16)

A system record of 15-9 in a short week of work for most due to the break.  The Phillies White team in the Dominican Summer League continued to shine going 4-0 for the week, they are 22-6 overall.  Strong pitching performances and timely hitting were key elements with multiple standouts throughout the system.

Lehigh Valley’s “pitching staff came out of the break shooting blanks with back-to-back shut-outs. Going back to pre-All-Star break, the IronPigs didn’t allow a run in 25 straight innings counting Sunday’s first five innings as well. It marks the first time since 4/29/18 (DH, 4-0/3-0 vs. SWB) that the IronPigs have thrown shutouts in back-to-back games.“ - thanks to Sam Jellinek - Iron Pigs Manager of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the notation.

Oliver Dunn had an outstanding week for Reading (6 for 12 (.500) with 2 doubles, a triple, HR and four RBIs, walk, .538 OBP) as did Matt Kroon.  Ethan Wilson hit a walk off home run on Sunday.

Both Jersey Shore and Clearwater overcame late game multi run deficits on Saturday night for comeback wins - good stuff and clutch performances.  Nick Ward  was clutch for the BlueClaws (4 for 11 (.364) with a home run, five RBIs, two walks, three runs, .429 OBP) and Felix Reyes had a standout power week for Clearwater (3 for 9 (.333) with two home runs and eight RBIs, a walk, .364 OBP).

Kendall Simmons (4 for 10 (.400), two doubles, HR, two RBIs, three walks, .538 OBP) had a strong week of injury rehab performances for the FCL Phillies and looks primed to return to Jersey Shore.

The system saw another player (Johan Rojas) make his major league debut this week, the second one to do so this season.  It brought out a ton of pride and joy throughout to see the electric young center fielder do his thing in the show, once there he did exactly what we’ve seen from him each day since he first arrived on the backfields, play with joy, confidence and passion, very happy for him!

Yemal Flores - 3 for 7 (.429) with a double, triple, two RBIs, .500 OBP

Santiago Torres - 3 for 10 (.300) with two runs scored

Leonardo Rondon - 2 for 5 (.400) with a double and three RBIs

Recap :

Thursday Game One  : Raylin Heredia was three for four, he’s fun to watch, makes me think of when I first saw Johan Rojas play on the backfields.  Heredia is now hitting a cool .400 on the season in 85 AB’s with a .485 OBP, he’s just 19 years old.  Kendall Simmons mashed the ball today, he doubled and homered in four AB’s.  Gustavo Sosa had two hits in four plate appearances, swung the bat well.  Yemal Flores singled and tripled, stung the ball hard both times, very strong young man and the swing reflects that. Marco Soto and Leonardo Rondon each doubled, Soto (19 years old) is another player with very solid tools, he’s shown a quick bat and strong defensive mechanics at shortstop.  Rondon had three RBIs, he’s also fun to watch, is a very smart player who has very quick hands as a hitter, just really enjoy his game, always into it and is a bundle of energy.

Thursday Game Two : Dakota Kotowski doubled, the team was held to two hits.

Friday : The team had seven hits, Marco Soto and Dakota Kotowski each doubled. Kendall Simmons walked three times in four plate appearances.

Saturday : Kendall Simmons and Marco Soto each had two hits (both singled & doubled).  Yemal Flores doubled.

Pitchers :

Daniel Mejia - four innings, no runs, one hit, two walks and five strikeouts.

Yoniel Ramirez - three scoreless frames, three hits, no walks, three strikeouts

Ezequiel Ventura - three innings, no runs, no hits, one walk and one strikeout

Giuseppe Velasquez - two innings, no runs, three hits, one walk, four strikeouts

Jose Peña Jr - two innings, no runs, one hit, three walks, three strikeouts

Recap :

Thursday Game One  : Five pitchers were used.  Nicoly Pina threw a scoreless inning as did Jesus Querales and Luis Gomez.  Could be my memory fading but I don’t remember Querales dropping down his arm slot in the past like he showed today, it wasn’t entirely a side winding approach but gave a different look and sweeping action.  Every time I’ve seen Gomez he goes right after the hitters, no fear and a strike thrower, got to like that.  I also thought that Nicoly threw the baseball better today, was letting it fly more.

Thursday Game Two : Guissepe Velasquez started and pitched two innings, no runs, three hits, one walk, four strikeouts. Jose Pena Jr threw two innings, no runs, one hit, three walks, three strikeouts.  Ezequiel Ventura retired the first eight batters he faced, he went three innings to complete the shutout, only allowed a walk, threw strikes, fastball sat 90 to 93 mph and off set it with a hook in the mid seventies.

Friday : Four pitchers were used, Yoniel Ramirez pitched three scoreless frames, three hits, no walks, three strikeouts.

Saturday : Six pitchers were used.  Daniel Mejia impressed as the starter, four innings, no runs, one hit, two walks and five strikeouts.  He got a lot of swing and miss strikes with what appeared to be a change up from my vantage point, had very deceptive movement and had hitters way off balance, good stuff.  Nathan Karaffa threw a perfect inning in the ninth, two strikeouts, he continues to impress, his ERA is now 1.88 in 8 appearances (14 1/3 IP).
