7/27/21 : Today’s FCL & DSL Action

Florida Complex League :

Phillies 6 ( 9-6 ) Blue Jays 1 ( 12-8 ) - Carpenter Complex

A typical hot and muggy Florida summer day today as the FCL Phillies squared off against the Jays.

LH Gabriel Cotto was very good on the hill, quick fast ball and an off speed delivery that continually produced swings and misses. It’s the best we’ve seen him perform as he went five scoreless innings allowing only 2 hits. He did fight command a bit with 4 walks but worked his way out of the self imposed jams and ended up with 10 K’s which is a career high. Very nice outing for the 21 year old from Puerto Rico.

The Phillies were held hitless thru three innings but broke thru for three runs in the fourth as DH Edward Barboza led off with a triple and scored on a single by rehabbing SS Chris Cornelius. 1B Felix Reyes doubled to score Cornelius and rehabbing LF Brock Stassi who had reached on an error.

LH Christian Soriano pitched the sixth inning - 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K.

We left in the top of the sixth inning as bad weather rolled in, the game went into a lighting delay in the top of the seventh.

Barboza doubled and later scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the 8th inning. Another run scored on a couple of Blue Jays fielding errors. Jose Cedeno hit a sac fly to score another run.

RH Brendan Bell pitched the final three innings for the Phillies - 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s

At Bat :

Edward Barboza had two knocks ( double & triple ). Felix Reyes also had two of the team’s six hits.

Notes :

Prior to the game five members of the Phillies FCL roster were assigned to the 60 day IL, backdated to 7/24 … SS Jamari Baylor, LHP’s Jaylen Smith & Riley Wilson, RHP Dalvin Rosario and INF Albert Jerez. In addition OF Johan Rojas from the Clearwater Threshers was assigned to the 60 day IL, backdated to 7/24.

The minor leagues don’t have a Covid related IL like the major leagues does. However the minor league 60 day IL takes a player off the organization’s roster list that counts towards the 180 MLB imposed stateside player limit and I’m pretty sure that there is an addendum to the 60 day IL as related to Covid concerns. Players placed on the minor league 60 day IL for Covid issues are not necessarily required to be inactive for the full 60 days but rather until they receive medical clearance to return. Not saying any of these fellas were put on the 60 day IL due to Covid issues.

Dominican Summer League : Seven Inning Games

Phillies White 8 ( 6-4 ) Mets2 7 ( 4-8 )

Nineteen year old C/1B Carlos Rondon had three of the team’s seven hits including a double, he scored twice and also knocked in a run. Eighteen year old Catcher Kliubert Avila tripled.

The Phillies used five hurlers with relievers LH Ronny Ramirez ( 18 yrs old ) - 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s and RH Estibenzon Jimenez ( 19 yrs old ) - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K - win having the most success.

Mets1 8 ( 8-4 ) Phillies Red 1 ( 3-7 )

Phillies hitters were held to three singles and five walks. DH leadoff hitter 17 year old Arquedion Muller from the Netherlands had one of the hits and two of the walks … it was his first professional hit as he’s appeared in just two games.

The Phillies used four pitchers with relievers 17 year old RH Ender Paz ( 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s ) and 19 year old LH Joelburt Angulo ( 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s ) having the most success.
