Game recaps, fun facts from around MLB ( games played on 7/29 ) …
Three shutouts and a walk off ... highlight the day ...
Rockies 5 ( 4-1 ) A’s 1 ( 3-3 )
Rockies Starter RH German Marquez was dominate in six innings of pitching allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out eight batters ... in four of his strikeouts he only needed three pitches to record the K ! Three Colorado relievers ( Carlos Estevez, Jairo Diaz and Yency Almonte ) pitched one hit scoreless baseball to finish the game.
Right Fielder Charlie Blackmon had two hits for Colorado ... Third Baseman Matt Chapman homered for Oakland.
Rangers 7 ( 2-3 ) Diamondbacks 4 ( 2-4 )
The Rangers scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning highlighted by a two run Joey Gallo home run to post the come from behind win. First Baseman Todd Frazier had three hits including a fourth inning home run to lead the offense.
RH Lance Lynn threw six innings of one hit shut out baseball for Texas with eight strikeouts and only two walks ... his second strong outing in as many starts.
LH Madison Bumgarner went 5 1/3 innings for Arizona - 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 K’s
Nationals 4 ( 2-4 ) Blue Jays 0 ( 3-3 ) 10 innings
Max Scherzer was outstanding for the visiting Nationals ( in their home park ) as he went 7 1/3 shutout innings allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out ten batters. Relievers Daniel Hudson and Tanner Rainey struck out another six batters behind him.
Asdrubel Cabrera delivered a bases loaded triple in the top of the tenth inning when the Nationals crosses the plate four times to break the scoreless tie.
Five Jays pitchers including starter RH Nate Pearson had held Washington to just three hits thru nine innings before a couple of walks and the placed runner set the state for Cabrera’s big knock.
White Sox 4 ( 2-4 ) Indians 0 ( 4-2 )
Chicago starter RH Lucas Giolito tossed six frames of four hit baseball walking two while striking out six batters ... he was followed by three relievers ( Evan Marshall, Aaron Bummer and Alex Colome ) who each threw an inning to complete the shutout.
The game was scoreless till the White Sox scored four times in the top of the ninth inning sparked by a double off the bat of Shortstop Tim Anderson and a two run single by Center Fielder Luis Robert.
Indians starter RH Zach Plesac was outstanding going eight shutout innings allowing just three hits, walking none and striking out eleven batters. Third Baseman Jose Ramirez had three of Cleveland’s six hits in the game.
Reds 12 ( 2-4 ) Cubs 7 ( 4-2 )
Right Fielder Nick Castellanos hit a grand slam home run in a seven run fifth inning to propel the Reds to victory in the slugfest. Second Baseman Mike Moustakas and Center Fielder Nick Senzel ( both back from the illness list ) each hit home runs as well.
Infielder Nico Hoerner had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice for the Cubs ... David Bote hit a two run homer in the ninth inning.
Brewers 3 ( 3-3 ) 3 Pirates 0 ( 2-4 )
Brewers starter RH Brandon Woodruff went 6 1/3 innings allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out ten batters in a dominating performance. David Phelps, Devin Williams and Josh Hader closed it out with perfect pitching and recorded four more strikeouts.
Center Fielder Ben Gamel and Second Baseman Keston Hiura each homered for Milwaukee.
Braves 7 ( 3-3 ) Rays 4 ( 4-2 )
Braves First Baseman Freddie Freeman had four hits and three RBIs including a two run home run to lead Atlanta’s offense. Left Fielder Marcel Ozuna and Shortstop Dansby Swanson each had two hits.
Third Baseman Joey Wendle ( Avon Grove High School ) had two hits for the Rays.
Tigers 5 ( 4-2 ) Royals 4 ( 2-4 )
Tigers Center Fielder JaCoby Jones had three hits including a solo home run and Second Baseman Jonathan Schoop drove in three runs including a two run tater to lead the way.
Third Baseman Maikel Franco had three hits ( including two doubles ) for the Royals ... he’s hitting .348 in 23 AB’s to start the season.
Red Sox 6 ( 2-4 ) Mets 5 ( 3-3 )
Boston scored three runs in the eighth inning for the come from behind win. Catcher Christian Vasquez hit a solo home run in the seventh inning and had two hits with three RBIs to lead the way. The Sox used six pitchers in the game and the Mets five hurlers - starter RH Jacob deGrom went six frames for New York ( 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s ).
First Baseman Peter Alonso had four hits for New York and Brandon Nimmo and Yoenis Cespedas each homered.
Dodgers 4 ( 4-2 ) Astros 2 ( 3-3 ) - 13 innings
Two rookies shined for the Dodgers ... Edwin Rios hit a two run home run in the top of the 13th inning for the game winning runs and relief pitcher RH Dennis Santana threw 2 1/3 innings of hitless shutout baseball to close the win ... he struck out four batters and walked two and successfully navigated his way around the extra innings placed runner at second base each inning. The Dodgers used nine pitchers in the contest.
RH Roberto Osuna excelled in relief for Houston with two perfect innings.
RHP Joe Kelly of the Dodgers was suspended for eight games by MLB for his part in instigating a bench clearing in game one of the series.
Yankees 9 ( 3-1 ) Orioles 3 ( 2-2 )
Despite a rough first inning in which he threw 21 pitches Garrett Cole went 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven in posting his second win of the season.
Yankees leadoff hitter DJ LeMahieu had four hits including a home run, scored twice and had two RBIs.
DH Dwight Smith hit a two run home run for Baltimore.
Twins 3 ( 4-1 ) Cardinals 0 ( 2-3 )
Twins starter LH Rich Hill went five innings allowing just two hits and a walk ... four relievers ( Tyler Duffy, Sergio Romo, Tyler Clippard and Taylor Rogers ) allowed just one hit the rest of the way and walked none.
Left Fielder Edwin Rosario hit a home run for Minnesota.
Giants 7 ( 3-3 ) Padres 6 ( 4-2 )
Giants Center Fielder Mike Yastrzemski hit a walk off home run into McCovey Cove in the ninth inning to post the win. It was his second home run of the game and his third hit. Shortstop Brandon Crawford also had three hits.
Third Baseman Manny Machado and Center Fielder Trent Grisham each homered for the Padres ... Grisham’s was a three run shot.
Mariners 10 ( 2-4 ) Angels 7 ( 2-4 )
Seattle scored four times in the last third of the game to earn the come from behind win. Third Baseman Kyle Seager led the way with three hits and three RBIs while teammates Center Fielder Kyle Lewis had three hits and Left Fielder Dylan Moore hit a three run home run.
DH Shohei Ohtani hit a three run home run for the Angels and Center Fielder Mike Trout had three hits including a double.
