8/31/22 : Phillies acquire reliever - will add him to major league roster

“The Phillies have traded for right-handed reliever Vinny Nittoli and plan to add him to their big league roster tomorrow, sources tell ESPN. Nittoli intended to opt out of his minor league deal today, but Toronto shipped him to Philadelphia first. He has excelled at AAA this year.” - Jeff Passan

The Phillies traded Catcher Karl Ellison to the Blue Jays in the exchange.

After beginning the season with the Yankees he was signed by the Blue Jays as a free agent on 7/26/22.

“With Buffalo, he appeared in 10 games and faced 37 batters over 9.2 innings. Of those 37 batters faced, he struck out 15 (40.5%) and walked only one (2.7%). In total, of the 184 total batters faced between both clubs in triple-A this year, Nittoli has a 32.1% strikeout rate and a 7.6% walk rate.” - Phillies Press Release

He brings a fastball that usually sits 91-93 MPH along with a slider and can flash a curveball as well.

He’s 31 years old and pitched college ball at Xavier, was drafted in 2014 in the 25th round by the Mariners. Has pitched in the Mariners, Twins, Yankees and Blue Jays organizations. Made one appearance in the big leagues with the Mariners in 2021.
