8/6/23 : Week Eighteen Minor League Review (7/31 to 8/6)

The seven teams went 24-15 for the week. They are a cumulative 297-233 for a winning percentage of .560. The four affiliates participating in split seasons are 78-58 (.574) in the second half.

Lehigh Valley’s Aramis Garcia had a standout week with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs, the veteran catcher has battled nagging injuries this year but had a healthy time at the plate this past week. Cal Stevenson also had a standout week as he helped the IronPigs win four of the six games played.  Veteran hurler Drew Hutchinson pitched a gem on Thursday - eight innings, one run, six hits, two walks, three strikeouts.

Reading had a great week in Hartford going 5-1.  Oliver Dunn was outstanding going 12 for 26 (.462) with three doubles, four home runs and eleven RBIs, two walks posting a .500 OBP.  Matt Kroon, Casey Martin and Madison Stokes also had standout weeks for the Eastern League’s leading offensive team.  The bullpen was stellar as nine different pitchers made multiple appearances during the week without allowing an earned run.  Mick Abel also turned in another strong start going five and a third scoreless frames.

Jersey Shore also got stellar bullpen pitching, they too had nine relievers make multiple appearances and yield no runs as they went 4-2 for the week.  Thanks to Greg Giombarrese - BlueClaws Director of Communications for pointing out that “Since the start of the second half the BlueClaws have a 2.53 bullpen ERA (50 ER in 177.2 IP with 189 strikeouts and 67 walks).  That is the best bullpen ERA in all of High-A in that period (since June 23rd).  In the last 15 games (since July 20th), over which the BlueClaws are 12-3, their bullpen ERA is 1.15 (9 ER in 70.1 IP).” In addition Rafael Marcano made a strong start on Saturday going five innings, no runs, four hits, three walks and five strikeouts.  The team pitched two shutouts against Brooklyn.

Clearwater had a tough week against Lakeland going 2-4 but Justin Crawford stood out going 8 for 18 (.444) with three doubles, a grand slam HR, ten RBIs, three walks and a .524 OBP.  William Bergolla and Bryan Rincon also had strong weeks.

The FCL Phillies went 2-4 and the DSL Phillies Red 2-2 while DSL Phillies White continues to shine going 5-0, they’ve won eleven straight games.  Outstanding pitching has been Team White’s calling card all season and it was again this week albeit outfielder Jerffson Pena also had a strong week going 6 for 14 (.429) with 2 doubles, 2 walks posting a .529 OBP.

The Phillies contingent of teams remain in contention or have clinched playoff spots in every league they are in this summer as they continue to “Protect the Standard”.  Good stuff.
