Yankees 8 ( 10-4 ) Rays 4 ( 6-8 ) - Game One - Seven Innings
The Yankees Gerrit Cole struck out ten batters over 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits and a walk ... Chad Green ( 1 /3 IP ) and Adam Ottavino ( perfect inning - 2 K’s ) finished it out. Aaron Judge had three hits including his 6th homer of the season, Giancarlo Stanton also homered and had two hits. Gio Urshela had two hits and three RBIs and Mike Ford homered.
Jose Martinez hit a two run home run for Tampa and Ji-Man Choi had two hits.
Rays 5 ( 7-8 ) Yankees 3 ( 10-5 ) - Game Two - Seven Innings
Austin Meadows had two hits ( including a double ), two RBIs and scored a run for Tampa. Six relievers combined to keep the Yankees at bay for the win.
Luke Voit had two hits for the Yankees and DJ LeMahieu had two RBIs.
Giancarlo Stanton left the game early with a tight left hamstring.
A’s 3 ( 11-4 ) Astros 1 ( 6-8 )
A’s starter Frankie Montas pitched seven shutout innings of two hit baseball ( no walks ) punching out five batters to earn his second win of the season. Jake Diekman and Liam Hendriks ( 5th save ) finished it out.
Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman each hit solo home runs with each getting two hits. Mark Canha also had two hits.
Framber Valdez pitched very well ( 7 IP , 2 R - 1 earned, 7 H, 1 BB, 9 K’s ) for Houston and Yuli Gurriel had two hits.
Tigers 11 ( 7-5 ) Pirates 5 ( 3-12 )
Detroit hit four first inning home runs ( Niko Goodrum, Miguel Cabrera, CJ Cron and Jeimer Candelario) to score five runs and never looked back ...
Cabrera, Candelario and Jonathan Schoop each had three hits with Goodrum and Cron getting two apiece. The Tigers pounded out sixteen hits.
Starter Derek Holland took it on the chin for the Pirates ( 5 IP, 9 R, 13 H, 1 BB ). Kevin Newman went 4 for 5 while Jarrod Dyson and Jacob Stallings each had two hits.
Indians 7 ( 9-7 ) White Sox 1 ( 8-7 )
Cleveland’s Zach Plesac tossed six shutout innings ( 5 H, 1 BB, 7 K’s ) and three relievers finished behind him.
Francisco Lindor, Franmil Reyes and Domingo Santana each had two hits with Reyes and Jordan Luplow each homering. Carlos Santana drew three walks.
Yoan Moncada homered for the White Sox. They used seven pitchers in the contest.
Chicago placed LHP Aaron Bummer on the injured list with a strained biceps before the game ... big loss for them.
Orioles 5 ( 7-7 ) Nationals 3 ( 4-7 )
Baltimore scored five runs in the eighth inning using three home runs ( Pat Valaika, Pedro Severino and Anthony Santander ( three run tater ) ) for the come from behind win. Cole Sulser and 6’7” RHP Miguel Castro ( throws 98 mph sinkers ! ) closed it out with an inning each.
Former Phillie Tom Eshelman started for the Orioles going four innings ( 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s ) followed by five relievers.
Nationals hurlers shut out the Orioles for seven innings ( Austin Voth - 5 IP, Javy Guerra and Tanner Rainey an inning each ) but Sean Doolittle gave up two runs in 1/3 IP and Daniel Hudson three runs in 2/3 IP ) .... Juan Soto had two hits for Washington.
Reds 4 ( 7-8 ) Brewers 1 ( 5-7 )
Anthony DeSclafani went six shutout innings ( 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K’s ) for the Reds and was followed by three relievers with Raisel Iglesias tossing a perfect ninth inning for his second save.
Eugenio Suarez hit a three run home run in the second inning which proved to be the game winner.
Ben Gamel doubled for Milwaukee ... their only extra base knock in four total hits for the Brew Crew.
Rangers 2 ( 5-8 ) Angels 0 ( 5-10 )
Kolby Allard went five frames ( 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K’s ) and five Rangers relievers followed him to combine on the four hit shutout ... Joey Gallo hit a fourth inning two run home run to account for all the runs in the contest. Todd Frazier had two hits.
Albert Pujols had two of the Angels four hits in the game. Patrick Sandoval pitched well ( 6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s ) in defeat.
Mets 8 ( 6-9 ) Marlins 4 ( 7-2 )
JD Davis remained red hot for the Mets ... he had two more hits including a three run seventh inning home run that put the game away. Davis had four RBIs and has now hit in twelve straight games. Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso also homered for New York and Amed Rosario had two knocks.
Rookie hurler David Peterson went five innings ( 2 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 K’s ) to pick up his first Citi Field win for the Mets ... five relievers closed out the game.
Jesus Aguilar, Corey Dickerson and Brian Anderson each had two hits for the Marlins. Logan Forsythe homered and walked twice as the DH.
LHP Daniel Castano made his major league debut for Miami by starting the game ... he went 4 1/3 innings ( 5 R - 4 earned, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s ) and Ex Phillie Pat Venditte, the switch pitcher, became the 25th hurler to appear for Miami this season in just nine games played ...
Note : Some may be wondering why Marlins top prospect and ex Phillie Sixto Sanchez hasn’t been promoted yet ... Sixto, by his own admission, came to Spring Training and Summer Camp out of shape and has been working his way into condition. At the alternate training site in Jupiter he’s up to three innings in length now ... when he gets to five innings the Marlins anticipate bringing him to the show.
Giants 5 ( 7-9 ) Dodgers 4 ( 10-5 )
Giants starter Johny Cueto had a no hitter thru five innings ... it was lost when a fly ball to left field off the bat of Kiko Hernandez was lost in the night sky by left field Hunter Pence and fell for a triple .... Cueto did get the win though by pitching 5 2/3 innings - 4 runs, 2 hits, 3 BB, 3 K’s ... three relievers ( Tony Watson, Tyler Rogers and Trevor Gott ) pitched no hit baseball behind him to finish.
Austin Slater hit two solo home runs for San Francisco out of the leadoff spot, Mike Yastrzemski also homered and had two hits. Donovan Solano had three more hits ( now hitting .462 in 52 AB’s ) and Evan Longoria contributed two knocks.
Clayton Kershaw ( 4 1/3 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 6 K’s ) took the loss for LA ... Justin Turner hit a three run home run against Cueto in the sixth inning.
Rockies 5 ( 11-3 ) Mariners 0 ( 5-11 )
Charlie Blackmon continues his scolding pace for the Rockies as he went three for four with two doubles and three RBIs ... he’s got a twelve game hitting streak going and is hitting .446 in 56 AB’s.
Daniel Murphy also had three hits for Colorado and Trevor Story had two knocks ... along with Blackmon they had eight of the nine Rockies hits in the game.
Rockies hurler Ryan Castellani made a terrific major league debut by pitching four no hit no run innings allowing just one walk and a hit batter while striking out three. Ryan is a philly guy, his mom used to work in the Phillies PR department ...
Three Rockies relievers ( Jeff Hoffman, Yency Almonte and Phillip Diehl ) allowed just one hit the balance of the game to complete the shutout.
JP Crawford had the lone hit for the Mariners.
Jays 2 ( 5-7 ) Red Sox 1 ( 5-9 )
Rookie LHP Anthony Kay was dominant in 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief for the Jays ( 2 H, 3 K’s ) to earn his first major league win. He was one of five Toronto hurlers in the game.
Vladi Guerrero Jr, Bo Bichette and Randal Grichuk had two hits apiece for the Jays.
Xander Bogaerts walked twice and had a hit for Boston ... they used seven pitchers in the game - starter Zack Godley went four innings ( 0 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s )
Royals 9 ( 6-10 ) Twins 6 ( 10-5 )
DH Jorge Soler hit two home runs, drove in four and scored twice to lead the Royals. Salvador Perez also homered and had three hits including a double. Nicky Lopez contributed two hits and also belted a home run.
Five Royals pitchers held on for the win with Trevor Rosenthal going 1 1/3 innings ( 1 H, 3 K’s ) of scoreless pitching to earn his third save.
Marwin Gonzalez had three hits for Minnesota, Byron Buxton had two hits and four RBIs including a three run home run. Max Kepler also homered and had two hits. DH Nelson Cruz hit his 4th home run of the season.
Diamondbacks 3 ( 6-9 ) Padres 2 ( 8-7 )
Merrill Kelly was again outstanding on the bump for the Diamondbacks ... he went six innings ( 1 R, 6 H, 0 BB, 4 K’s ) to post his second win of the season. Three relievers finished it out with Archie Bradley recoding his third save by tossing a scoreless ninth inning ( 0 H, 1 BB ).
Starling Marte hit a two run home run and doubled for Arizona and Catcher Stephen Vogt hit a solo homer to account for the D’Backs third run.
Fernando Tatis Jr had three hits and hit two solo home runs for the Padres. Starter Chris Paddack pitched well ( 5 2/3 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 K’s ) but took the loss ... three relievers ( Matt Strahm, Pierce Johnson and Javy Guerra ) tossed perfect baseball over 3 1/3 innings.
