Each Monday this year for the Phillies minor league full season affiliates is a scheduled off day. They get to re-charge from a six day run of games before starting on another stretch the next day.
Here’s a review of the past week with a spot light on players from each team who had good, even great numbers and performances.
Lehigh Valley ( Overall Record 37-44, 3-3 during the past week) - next series @ Scranton Wilkes Barre ( Yankees affiliate ) ...
1B Darick Hall - went 9 for 24 ( .375 ) during the week with 2 doubles, 3 monstrous home runs ( two over 450 feet ) and 10 RBIs. Dating back to 7/1 he’s 31 for 94 ( .330 ) with 8 doubles, 6 home runs and 22 RBIs. During that time he’s raised his season average over 60 points and both his slugging percentage and OPS are becoming closer in line with his career totals in those categories.
OF/1B/3B Matt Vierling - went 8 for 26 ( .308 ) during the week while UTL Arquimedes Gamboa went 7 for 20 ( .350 ) during the week between Reading & LHV, he was promoted on 8/6 and had three hits in his first game as an Iron Pig.
OF Mickey Moniak - went 6 for 20 ( .300 ) for the week … he’s coming off a terrific month of July when he hit .342 ( 27 for 79 ) with 8 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs and 19 RBIs.
OF Charlie Tilson - went 8 for 27 ( .296 ) during the week with two doubles. He had a 7 game hitting streak ( 12 for 31 - .387 ) end on 8/7. The 28 year old veteran is a speedster and has provided the Iron Pigs with solid defense and a burner at the top of the order. He’s now hitting .299 ( 40 for 134 ) in 37 games since signing as a free agent on 6/22/21.
Strong Pitching :
RH Adonis Medina - has been very good as he continues to work his way back from an extended stay on the IL with 2 scoreless innings on 8/3 ( 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s ) and 3 perfect innings on 8/8 … that follows 2 scoreless frames on 7/27 - 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K’s which was his first action since 6/26. He’s in line to pitch the next time Phillies need a starter with Chase Anderson on the IL … just sayin 🤔
LH Jeff Singer - all he does is take the ball and battle every time he’s asked … on 8/3 he tossed a scoreless inning - 1 H, 2 K’s … again on 8/6 with an 1 1/3 scoreless appearance - 1 H, 2 K’s. His third appearance of the week was on 8/8 … 1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s In his last six games he’s yielded just one run and struck out 10 over 7 1/3 IP.
LH Christopher Sanchez - pitched 4 scoreless innings on 8/4 allowing just one hit and no walks. He struck out 6 batters. He’s struck out 50 batters in 42 1/3 IP at the AAA level this year.
Reading ( Overall Record 33-51, 3-3 during the past week) - next series @ home vs Akron ( Indians affiliate ) ...
INF Chris Cornelius - went 6 for 16 ( .375 ) during the week between Jersey Shore and Reading. He was promoted to Reading on 8/6 and went 5 for 11 ( .454 ) as a Fightin. When he’s played Chris has had a very solid season, he’s hitting .327 ( 19 for 58 ) in 19 games combined with the FCL team/Jersey Shore/Reading. He was out from 5/22 to 7/19 with an injury. Selected in the 16th round of the 2019 draft from the University of Missouri it’s great to see the now 23 year having on field success.
UTL Matt Kroon - went 7 for 19 ( .368 ) for the week … he’s 19 for 60 ( .317 ) since being reactivated on 7/17 with Jersey Shore, Matt was promoted to Reading from JS on 7/22.
C Rodolfo Duran - was placed again on the IL on 8/7 but before that went 5 for 11 ( .455 ) between Lehigh Valley and Reading. Rodolfo caught two games against Buffalo for the Iron Pigs to begin the week and went 3 for 7, he went 2 for 4 against Richmond for the Fightin’s on 8/6.
Strong Pitching :
LH Josh Hendrickson - on 8/3 - 6 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 4 K’s … now has 71 1/3 IP for the season with a 3.53 ERA ( 67 K’s, 22 BB ).
RH Jack Perkins - on 8/4 - 5 2/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 K’s … he’s 3-1 with a 3.59 ERA in 10 starts for Reading ( 52 2/3 IP, 43 K’s, 16 BB ) - very solid season
RH Francisco Morales - on 8/8 - 6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 9 K’s … he’s now recorded 85 K’s in 65 IP and has pitched 5 innings or more in his five of his last seven starts
LH Zach Warren - two scoreless appearances ( 8/4 & 8/6 ) - 1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 3 K’s … hasn’t yielded a run in his last six appearances ( 6 2/3 IP ) with only 1 hit allowed while striking out 8 batters.
RH James McArthur - 8/5 - 4 1/3 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 8 K’s … 11 1/3 scoreless frames in his last three appearances - 6 H, 3 BB, 13 K’s …
RH Hans Crouse - Reading debut on 8/6 - 5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K’s … mixed pitches well and threw quality strikes
RH Adam Leverett - 8/7 - 4 1/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s & RH Noah Skirrow - 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 K’s
Jersey Shore ( Overall Record 37-46, 1-4 during the past week) - next series @ Hudson Valley ( Yankees affiliate ) ...
Strong Pitching :
RH Andrew Brown - made two multi inning scoreless relief appearances ( 8/3 & 8/6 ) tossing 5 1/3 innings - 1 H, 4 BB, 8 K’s … he’s coming off a stellar month of July when he posted a 1.93 ERA in 7 games ( 14 IP ) with 18 K’s. The 23 year old 2016 13th round draft choice from El Cajon, CA has very good stuff when he’s commanding it, has shown mid 90’s velocity on the heater this season. Turning some heads …
RH Seranthony Dominguez - made three rehab appearances throwing 3 scoreless innings ( 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s ). The stadium speed gun at Lakewood registers slow ( usually 3 for 4 MPH ) which is misleading … his fastball velocity actually sat in the 93-97 range this week.
LH Jhordany Mezquita - 8/4 - 4 2/3 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 7 K’s … second consecutive strong outing for the 23 year old following 4 2/3 scoreless innings on 7/28 - 4 H, 0 BB, 7 K’s - the fastball has been particularly lively in these two games.
RH Tom Sutera - another scoreless appearance on 8/5 - 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s following 3 shutout innings on 8/1 - 1 H, 1 BB … since returning to Jersey Shore he’s pitched in 4 games ( 11 2/3 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 7 K’s. The 24 year old has provided excellent relief.
Clearwater ( Overall Record 38-41, 1-4 during the past week) - next series @ Tampa ( Yankees affiliate ) ...
Strong Pitching :
LH Gabriel Cotto - 8/5 - 4 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 6 K’s - his Threshers debut … follows a
strong FCL start on 7/27 when he pitched 5 scoreless innings allowing 2 hits and 4 walks while striking out a career high 10 batters. Gabriel is 21 years old and was the club’s 7th round draft selection in the 2018 draft.
Strong Pro debut : RH Andrew Baker - 1 perfect IP on 8/7/21 - 3 K’s - 12 pitches - 10 strikes … 4 seam fastball ( 96-99 mph 🔥), curve ( 81-82 mph ), slider ( 83 mph ) - 2021 11th round draft choice - Chipola Junior College - Florida

Phillies Red : ( 8-11 ) Phillies White ( 12-7 )
INF Erick Brito - went 7 for 11 ( .636 😳 ) for the week for Phillies White. The 19 year old has a .368 batting average in 38 AB’s on the season and has also walked 15 times, his OBP in 17 games is .561 and his OPS is .982 … Erick signed with the Phillies on 11/29/18 and has played all four infield positions in his DSL career as well as left field. He played in 21 DSL games in 2019.
