9/3/23 : Week Twenty-Two Minor League Review (8/28 to 9/3)

The four full season teams went 12-11 in regular season games for the week. The seven clubs in the system are now a cumulative 369-298 in the regular season for a winning percentage of .553.  The four affiliates participating in split seasons are 127-106 (.545) in the second half.

Team Phillies White lost in the semi-final round of the Dominican Summer League playoffs two games to one to the Pirates Gold squad.  The Pirates went on to lose to the Dodgers Bautista team in the championship series two games to one.  Right handed starting pitcher Luis Gonzalez was excellent in the sole Phillies series win on Monday as he went eight scoreless innings, three hits, no walks, seven strikeouts.  It was another strong season for the team, in fact over the past three DSL regular seasons (2021 to 2023) the Phillies White team has the most wins and the best regular season winning percentage in the league (118-52 -.694)  followed by Padres Gold (110-61 - .643), Red Sox Blue (110-62 - .640) and Dodgers Bautista (108-61 - .639), congrats to all those involved at the Academy for another fine showing in the DSL.  Fall Instructs began at the Dominican Academy on Friday and will run for the next three weeks.

Lehigh Valley went 6-0 against Syracuse.  Shaun Anderson turned in what may be the best pitching effort of the year for the IronPigs on Friday, eight innings, one run, four hits, one walk, seven strikeouts.  Kody Clemens had a day on Saturday - three hits (two doubles and grand slam HR, six RBIs).  Weston Wilson hit two home runs and a double on Sunday.  Wilson was 9 for 19 (.474) for the week with a double, triple, four home runs and nine RBIs - five walks, .583 OBP.  Clemens was 8 for 22 (.364) with ten runs, two doubles, triple, three home runs and nine RBIs, two walks, .417 OBP.   The club is tied with Durham for the second half title.

Reading struggled this week although Mick Abel turned in a second consecutive good outing going five innings, one run, two hits, two walks, five strikeouts in his start and David Parkinson continued his hot streak as well (six innings, two runs, six hits, three walks, six strikeouts).

Jersey Shore remained in the hunt for the second half South Atlantic League northern division title by going 4-2 for the week including a dramatic come from behind walk off game winning three run home run by Felix Reyes on Sunday - smoked it with an exit velocity of 108 mph 🔥.  Mitch Neunborn was outstanding in his start on Thursday - five no hit, no run innings, one walk, ten strikeouts which included with his prior home field start his stat-line in his final two regular season appearances at Lakewood he posted 10 IP, 0 runs, 0 hits, 2 walks, 19 strikeouts 👀😳.  That’s pretty good eh!  The BlueClaws are tied with Brooklyn for the second half playoff spot, six games left to decide the winner, Jersey Shore will travel to Hudson Valley and Brooklyn will host Wilmington.

Clearwater struggled this week against Fort Myers but finished with a win on Sunday in the final home game of the regular season.  After a trip to Palm Beach next week they will be in the league playoffs beginning on 9/12 as the first half Florida State League West division champions.

One more week of regular season play for the A level clubs with both possibly appearing in the playoff round thereafter.
