Today at the Complex :

Watched Andrew Painter throw his first live BP today - he faced Dante Nori and Kodey Shojinaga and was caught by Brahian Silva. After his first pitch a coach exclaimed “Welcome back big guy!”.  It’s the second time I’ve seen him throw as he threw a side session last week.  The thing with Painter is that he truly pitches in his sessions, doesn’t just throw - yes he popped 99 mph today as well.  He informs his catcher where he wants to place the pitch, side to side, up or down and with what movement and he usually hits the spot!  Today went very well, he threw 15 pitches - got some swing and misses and impressed.  Still a ways to go yet - the usual process is a series of live BP’s assuming no set backs with incremental pitch counts before concluding sessions this year and returning next January to continue.  Nonetheless a very important first step on the mound facing hitters.

The journey back from injuries, especially elongated ones like TJ recovery is hard work that is usually inclusive of multiple ups and downs. From my observances and  feedback from players rehab pitching coordinator Aaron Barrett is excellent at guiding the fellas back.  The supporting rehab team of trainers and coaches - in all aspects, physical, medical and mental are top drawer.  I think they all take great pride and satisfaction on days like today with the hope, faith and expectations that more will follow.  That’s good stuff.
