An inside look at the Phillies top prospects.
(MLBPipeline lists the top 30 prospects on each team’s website. While biding time waiting for baseball to resume, Steve Potter will provide his views of these young players. LHP Kyle Dohy.
Phillies #29 prospect according to MLB.com … 23 years old … 2017 16th round selection out of Cal Poly ...
Dohy can reach the mid 90’s with his fastball but in my opinion it’s his secondary pitches that set him apart , has a slider that falls off the table and a change up akin to those delivered by a young Cole Hamels. His career strikeout ratio is incredible ... 238 K’s in 155 IP ... the only thing that’s kept him out of the show to date is control ... 121 free passes. The stuff is electric though ... whenever we’ve seen him pitch we have always been impressed.
Kyle is a very intuitive and progressive thinker, he’s a proponent of using a product called the “Core Velocity Belt” in his pitching workouts which emphasizes using the lower half when throwing. He’s also very adept in using analytical data and video review to strengthen his game. His pitch delivery takes all of that into account, it’s unique and irregular, but also very deceptive.
One thing folks may not be aware of about Kyle is his musical ability. He relaxes by playing the guitar and from what we’ve heard is a very good musician.
Projection : from my perspective finding a consistent release point is key to his further success - has all the tools ... He’s a strikeout machine ... If he can garner control and command then he’s got a very bright big league future ahead of him.
