A FAN’S VIEW: OF Simon Muzziotti

An inside look at the Phillies top prospects.

(MLBPipeline lists the top 30 prospects on each team’s website. While biding time waiting for baseball to resume, Steve Potter will provide his views of these young players. A Clearwater resident, his passion is seeing and following these prospects in person. Normally, Spectrum Field and Carpenter Complex are his second homes. OF Simon Muzziotti

Phillies # 10 prospect according to MLB.com … 21 years old … signed 7/2/2015 by Red Sox ... signed by Phillies 7/5/2016 after being declared a free agent by MLB ... from Cumana, Venezuela

Simon plays baseball the right way, he’s a very intelligent player who rarely makes an on field mistake ... it’s one of the things that becomes quickly evident when you watch him perform.

Defensively he’s outstanding ... covers a lot of ground as a center fielder, great reads and routes and a solid arm. We’ve seen him make plays on balls that seemed to be sure hits off the bat ... big league defensive ready right now.

Offensively he’s an old school leadoff hitter, doesn’t strike out much and generally puts the ball in play with a line drive type stroke. He’s a decent base stealer as well, hasn’t shown a power bat yet but the bat speed we’ve witnessed indicates that will come with added strength.

Projection : 2020 was going to be a big development year for Simon as he was likely gonna open the season with AA level Reading. There’s plenty to like in his game, was anxious to see him perform at the higher level ... Simon has handled every level well to date ... I’d expect that trend to continue.
