According to Melissa Lockard of the Athletic the Phillies have signed 29 year old infielder Vimael Machin to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training camp. Machin is from Puerto Rico and was the 10th round draft selection of the Chicago Cubs in the 2015 draft from Virginia Commonwealth University.
He played last season in the Oakland A’s organization and posted a .220 batting average and .300 OBP in 73 major league games ( 253 PA’s ) - also played with them in the majors in both 2020 and 2021. Machin appeared in 64 games at the AAA level for Las Vegas as well in 2022 hitting .324 with a .400 OBP in 292 plate appearances with 16 doubles, 3 triples and 4 home runs. He only struck out 30 times and walked in 33 plate appearances in the minors last season. He’s a career .277/.368/.399 minor league hitter in 2,457 plate appearances
Vimael is a versatile defender who has played all four infield positions for the A’s in the show and has played at every position except pitcher and catcher in the minor leagues. He’s a left handed hitter who will compete for a reserve infielder role in big league camp.
Machin was actually taken by the Phillies in the 2019 rule 5 draft and traded to the A’s the same day for cash considerations. He’s played in the Cubs and A’s organizations.
From a fan’s view welcome to the organization Vimael !
