The 26 year old was designated for assignment by the Cubs on 12/24/22. He was the Cubs 4th round draft selection in the 2017 draft from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Last season in 25 major league appearances ( all in relief ) he posted a 2-1 record with a 4.67 ERA in 27 games with 1 save in two chances. He struck out 21 and walked 12 and had a 1.37 WHIP.
Eric made his major league debut during the 2022 season after pitching in 28 games for AAA Iowa posting a 2.79 ERA ( 42 IP ) with 52 K’s and 23 walks - he recorded 6 saves in 10 opportunities. “He is a sinker ball pitcher with that as his primary pitch - gets weak contact more than swing and misses, bottom falls out of the pitch making it difficult to square up. Works low in the zone. Can touch 95. Sits 91-94. The slider is his best secondary pitch - will throw it in any count and it plays well off of the sinker.” - Prospect Live
“Pounds the bottom of the strike zone with a heavy sinker that has the Cubs wondering if he might be the second coming of Derek Lowe. Uelmen operates from a low three-quarters arm slot” - Cubs Central
According to his baseball savant charts he threw four pitches in the big leagues ( four seam FB, sinker, slider & change up ).
The Phillies acquired Uelmen for cash considerations, he will compete for a bullpen role in spring training - to make room on the 40 man roster RHP Vinny Nittoli was designated for assignment.
From a fan’s view welcome to the organization Eric!
