So we continue - the first article in the series on pitchers  ⚾️🤓.

Thanks to Matt Winkleman ( Phillies Minor Thoughts ) for his diligent efforts in detailing most of the speed gun readings.

Mick Abel - RHP - 21 years old - Birthdate : 8/18/01 - 1st round draft choice - 2020 - Jesuit High School - Portland, OR - This Fan’s View -  has dominant “stuff” - had a learning season of growth focusing on how to sequence pitches, tackle situations and work on executing pitches ( particularly in the stretch ).  The stats may not pop out to some however when you see him pitch in person the capability becomes very clear.  Mick finished his season strong posting a 2.51 ERA in three September starts with AA level Reading.  He’s got four plus pitches.  A cordial young man who’s a baseball sponge - very receptive to coaching and wants to excel - has all the tools to do so.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 93 to 98 mph - max 99  ), change up ( 84 to 90 mph ), slider ( 83 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 77 to 83 mph ) -  2023 Projection -  He will be in spring big league camp with a shot to earn a spot to go north with the Phillies.  At the least will be in the Reading opening day rotation.

Jose Acuna - LHP - 20 years old - Birthdate : 9/25/02 - 2021 14th round draft selection - Veterans Memorial High School, Mission, TX - This Fan’s View - has a big spin curve ball that is a swing and miss pitch - working on strength & conditioning and repeatable mechanics - saw limited action in the FCL appearing in seven games, dealt with nagging injuries over the summer  - comes from a great family that we had the pleasure to meet this summer as they visited Clearwater on a couple of occasions.  - The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 86 to 91 mph - max 92 ), change -up ( 77 to 80 mph ) and curve ( 76 to 78 mph ).  2023 Projection -  could compete for a full season roster spot in the spring - needs to come to camp ready to go.

Mike Adams - RHP -28 years old -  Birthdate : 9/7/94 - signed as free agent 1/19/21 - Wagner University - New Jersey -  This Fan’s View -  pitched primarily at Reading in 2022 with a short stint with Lehigh Valley - 5.28 ERA in 61 1/3 IP with Reading - 58 strikeouts and 29 walks - often used as a multi inning reliever in 37 games - posted seven wins.  Struggled at times with command/control - slider has a cutting action - can be an out pitch.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 93 to 95 mph - max 96 ), change -up ( 83 to 87 mph ) and slider. ( 82 to 86 mph ).  2023 Projection - can earn a AAA Lehigh Valley role in spring camp with better command.

Samuel Aldegheri - 21 years old - LHP - Birthdate :  9/19/01 - signed 7/2/19 as international free agent  - Verona, Italy - This Fan’s View - pitched well in 2021 with Clearwater appearing in 8 games and posting a 2.57 ERA in 21 IP.  Battled the injury bug in 2022 and was placed on the 60 day IL early ( 4/8/22 ) - returned to action in the FCL on July 16th and finished the season on the backfields throwing a total of 12 1/3 innings over 8 games posting a 1.46 ERA.  We like his upside of size, demeanor ( doesn’t scare ) and repertoire - first saw him perform in 2019 Fall Instructs - losing the 2020 season hurt every player but in particular fellas like Samuel with relative inexperience on top of a language barrier.  He’s become more familiar with the surroundings now and thus more comfortable - needs innings to see what he might become.   The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 89 to 93 mph - max 94 ), change -up ( 80 to 81 mph ) and curve ( 74 to 78 mph ).   2023 Projection - still very inexperienced - could open in extended spring training - at some point, perhaps even out of spring camp, we see him pitching for Clearwater.

Aiden Anderson - 25 years old RHP - Birthdate :  6/21/97 - signed 6/18/19 as an un-drafted free agent - McNeese State - This Fan’s View - he’s a battler - works hard and shows up every day.  Began the 2022 season in extended spring camp - was assigned to Clearwater in mid April and moved to Jersey Shore at the end of that month.  Earned a promotion to Reading on August 4th which is where he finished the season.  Multi inning reliever who will throw strikes and get right after it - posted a 3.72 ERA with JS in 29 IP with 26 K’s and 7 walks - recorded 8 saves in 9 chances.  Struggled to find his footing in Reading ( 6 games ).  We did a spotlight article on him on 6/15/22 - here’s the link - https://www.philliesbaseballfan.com/post/6-15-22-spotlight-series-anderson-mccollum-schultz.     Aidan primarily used a two pitch mix ( FB/Slider) but will mix in a curve/changeup.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 88 to 94 mph - max 94 ), change-up ( 77 to 81 mph ) and slider ( 80 to 85 mph ).  2023 Projection -  likely a part of the Reading bullpen crew in the same role he ended the ‘22 season.

Chase Antle - 25 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 2/16/97 - signed 6/16/20 as an un-drafted free agent - Coastal Carolina -  This Fan’s View - Has yet to pitch in a professional game - went directly into rehab work after signing for recovery from TJ surgery ( done in college ).  He was a high velocity reliever ( 97 -99 mph ) in college at both Bowling Green and Coastal Carolina.  It was discovered this year that the injury issue wasn’t his elbow but rather a different area which required another surgery.  He’s determined to return to the mound and is persistent in that pursuit.  Chase has now reached the throwing stage of his rehab work again. Coming back from injury is perhaps the most trying endeavor for a ball player - especially for a fella who’s yet to get his first rush from pro competition.  We’ve seen glimpses of what he’s capable of - have faith that there’s a power hurler still there that can climb the ladder. 2023 Projection - when healthy - watch out - we think he will excel.

Mark Appel - 31 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 7/15/91 - trade acquisition from Astros 12/12/15 - retired 4/5/18 and returned to active play 4/3/21 - This Fan’s View -  made his major league debut on June 29th - appeared in 6 big league games ( 10 1/3 IP ) and posted a 1.74 ERA - had a very solid 2022 minor league season for Lehigh Valley - 3.15 ERA in 31 games ( 40 IP ) with 36 K’s and 17 walks - posted 5 saves - was exceptional from May thru July ( 16 appearances - 21 1/3 IP - 1.25 ERA ).   Very likable and grounded young man - is at peace with himself and his surroundings - just a great and humbling story of how he persevered and came back from years of injury and disappointment.  A person everyone roots for.   The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 94 to 95 mph - max 96 ), change-up ( 84 mph ) and slider ( 82 to 85 mph ). 2023 Projection - elected minor league free agency
