2/28/23 : Today in Spring Training

Minor League Mini- Camp :

Side Bullpens :

Fifteen pitchers threw side bullpen sessions on the seven mounds in front of the David Montgomery Training Center - Tyler Phillips, Eduar Segovia, Alex McFarlane, Gunner Mayer, Sam Aldegheri, Spencer Van Scoyoc, Wesley Moore, Brett Schulze, Andrew Walling, Jordi Martinez, Cam Wynne, Chase Antle, Jordan Fowler, Eiberson Castellano & Jason Ruffcorn

Live Bullpens :

Ten pitchers threw afternoon live bullpen sessions on Roberts and Ashburn fields - Jaydenn Estanista ( 2 innings - up/down ), Matt Russell, Ethan Lindow, Hans Crouse, Zach Linginfelter, Alex Rao, Tommy McCollum, Yoniel Ramirez, Orion Kerkering & Josh Bortka

Phillies Phamily Phriends :

I had the honor to meet RHP Andrew Schultz’s parents this morning at the Complex - they gave me a great compliment by telling me they follow my writings - also chatted at length at the Complex with old buddy Dan Ward ( Nick Ward’s dad ) - Dan and I were longtime teammates in the Kennett Men’s Senior League as well as in various tournaments - he’s a former battery mate of mine who had the misfortune of trying to catch a not so crafty lefty in many a game 😎.   Good stuff.

Major League Camp :

Side Bullpens :

Jeremy Walker, Jake Jewell, Christopher Sanchez & Noah Song all threw side bullpen sessions before the Grapefruit League game.

Roger Clemens was in camp today to watch his son Kody play but also watched the live bullpen sessions - he gave some good advice in regards to pitching mindset - namely when you’re on the mound it’s up to you to apply all you’ve learned, you become your own pitching coach out there and having the conviction to believe in both yourself and your training is how to succeed - helps to to also have put away stuff 🤓.

Grapefruit League Action :

Phillies 7 ( 4-1 ) Blue Jays 2 ( 2-3 )

Summary :

The Phillies scored five runs in the 4th inning - Alec Bohm walked, advanced to third base on a single by Kody Clemens and scored on a single by Johan Rojas.   Vito Friscia doubled down the left field line to score Clemens and send Rojas to third base.  Trea Turner singled to score them both.  JT Realmuto & Nick Castellanos singled - Turner scored on the hit by Castellanos.

Zach Britton homered for the Blue Jays in the sixth inning.  Sebastian Espino homered for them in the eighth.  Vilmael Machin doubled to score Rafael Marchan ( walked ) and John Hicks ( doubled ) in the bottom of the 8th for the Phillies.

Zack Wheeler breezed thru two perfect innings striking out two batters and posting his fastball in the upper nineties.  Six of the nine Phillies hurlers in the game posted scoreless efforts - we continue to be impressed with RH Yunior Marte who has shown 98-99 mph velocity on his heater as well as RH James McArthur who is also throwing the baseball very well.

At the Plate :   11 H, 5 BB, 7 K’s

Trea Turner had two hits and two RBIs along with scoring a run in three AB’s.  Vilmael Machin went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs subbing in for Turner at shortstop.  Vito Friscia & John Hicks each doubled.

Defensive Gems :

Center fielder Johan Rojas made a diving catch on a sinking liner on a ball he initially lost in the sun off the bat - the kid is a wizard in the outfield - we’ve seen him excel as a defender throughout his career.
