6/7/21 : Week Five Standouts ( 6/1 to 6/6 )

Each Monday this year for the Phillies minor league full season affiliates is a scheduled off day. They get to re-charge from a six day run of games before starting on another stretch the next day.

Here’s a review of the past week with a spot light on players from each team who had good, even great numbers and performances.

Lehigh Valley ( Overall Record 16-14 , 3-3 during the past week) - next series at home vs Rochester Red Wings ( Nationals affiliate ) ... they are 10-20 overall

2B/SS Ruben Tejada - went 6 for 20 ( .300 ) during the week including a 3 hit game on June 1st. For the season he’s hitting .290 in 17 games ( 62 AB’s )

OF Mickey Moniak - went 7 for 24 ( .292 ) during the week with 1 double, 3 home runs and 9 RBI’s. Two home runs came in a three hit game on 6/4. Mickey got off to a slow beginning the first four weeks but things certainly picked up this week ... you could see the progress coming during the previous week albeit the hits weren’t falling.

3B/OF Austin Listi - went 5 for 16 ( .313 ) for the week, also drew 4 walks. He had a seven game hitting streak over which he hit .333 ( 7 for 21 ) ... that ended Sunday. Just too good a hitter to keep down, he’s also had a slow start but things will continue to pick up just like they have this week.

LHP Bailey Falter - continues to impress with another strong outing on 6/4 going 5 innings ... 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 6 K’s. For the season he’s now 2-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 6 starts ( 28 1/3 IP ) with just 7 walks and 41 K’s ... his WHIP is 1.02.

LHP Jeff Singer - appeared in 3 games ( 3 2/3 IP ) allowing no hits and one walk. He struck out 3 batters ... Jeff’s been brought into some very tough jams this season and for the most part has pitched out of them ... for the season he’s posted a 1.38 ERA in 12 games ( 13 IP ) with a WHIP of 0.85 with only 4 walks and 14 K’s. He’s become more of a complete pitcher using his secondary offerings and not the high velocity FB reliant hurler he was early in his career. The Gunslinger still has the same no fear approach though ... gets right after it 👍.

At the Olympic Qualifiers ... UTL Luke Williams went 8 for 18 ( .444 ) in four games with a double, triple, home run and five RBIs and scored six runs out of the leadoff spot in the lineup. Luke played LF for Team USA. He had an outfield assist against Nicaragua. Strong start to his season has continued ... he left the Iron Pigs with a .352 average in 18 games ( 71 AB’s ).

Reading ( Overall Record 6-24, 2-4 during the past week) - next series at home vs Hartford Yard Goats ( Rockies affiliate ) ... they are 9-21 overall

2B Daniel Brito - 8 for 25 ( .320 ) for the week … had a a nine game hitting streak which he went 12 for 36 ( .333 ) end but is now on a two game streak. Over the last 11 games he’s raised his season average 45 points ... now at .265 for the season in 102 AB’s. We’ve always been high on his abilities ... starting to shine thru after a slow start ... just the beginning.

LHP Taylor Lehman - threw 5 shutout innings on 6/2 allowing 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 batters. He’s got a 3.52 ERA in 5 games ( 3 starts ) in 15 1/3 IP

RHP Billy Sullivan - continues to impress in just his first professional season, I don’t recall many pitchers reaching the AA level in their first season of play. The fireballing reliever struck out six batters in two innings of work on 6/4 posting his first career save. He’s been in 9 games combined between High A Jersey Shore and AA Reading ( 12 1/3 IP - 1 R, 5 H, 4 BB, 16 K’s ... 0.73 ERA and WHIP ). The 22 year old Delawarean has shined early and often 👍.

Jersey Shore ( Overall Record 13-16, 4-2 during the past week) - next series at home vs Wilmington Blue Rocks ( Nationals affiliate ) ... they are 15-14 overall

C Logan O’Hoppe - 9 for 18 ( .500 ) for the week with 4 doubles and 2 home runs. Had a three hit game on 6/3 and 6/6 has a 6 game hitting streak. In 89 AB’s he’s hit 7 doubles, 4 home runs and has 13 RBIs ... has also walked 11 times.

OF Jhailyn Ortiz - 8 for 23 ( .348 ) with a double, 3 home runs and 5 RBIs. Six game hitting streak has raised his season average 20 points to .259 ... 5 HR and 19 RBIs in 108 AB’s

UTL Cole Stobbe - 6 for 15 ( .400 ) during the week including a 4 hit game on 6/3.

1B/C Vito Friscia - 5 for 17 ( .294 ) for the week with a double, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs. He’s hitting .264 in 53 AB’s for the season. When he played in the GCL in 2019 we saw him as a team leader and one who hits the ball consistently hard, was amongst the system leaders in exit velocity off the bat.

RHP Adam Leverett - another strong performance on 6/2 ... 3 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s ... for the season he’s posted a 0.55 ERA in 5 games ( 3 starts ) in 16 1/3 IP with 17 K’s and 5 walks ... WHIP is 0.67.

RHP Carlo Reyes - 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief on 6/2 with 3 K’s and 2 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K on 6/6 ... promoted to JS from CW on 5/28 he’s 2-0 in 11 games combined ( 16 IP ) with a great 0.56 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP allowing just 8 hits and 4 walks with 21 K’s. He generally sits in the 92-93 range with the FB but has touched 94 ... it’s a sinker with loads of movement which he uses as a primary pitch ... also has a curveball ( 80 -83 ) and a four seamer that he spots ( 93-94 ). The 22 year old has a good idea on how to pitch and it’s shown.

Clearwater ( Overall Record 16-14, 5-1 during the past week) - next series at home vs Tampa Tarpons ( Yankees affiliate ) ... they are 22-8 overall

SS/2B Luis Garcia - 9 for 28 ( .321 ) with 3 doubles, 6 RBIs and 5 walks. He had a five game hitting streak end on 6/6 and is 13 for his last 42 ( .309 ).

SS/2B Casey Martin sat out three games with an injury but returned to finish the week and went 6 for 14 ( .429 )

C Abrahan Gutierrez was 7 for 23 ( .304 ) with 4 BB, 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. He’s hitting a very solid .306 in 22 games ( 85 AB’s ) with 5 doubles, a HR and 13 RBIs as well as 15 BB ... his OBP is .412

OF Ben Pelletier went 5 for 17 ( .294 ) and had a double, HR and 3 RBIs.

OF Baron Radcliff - drew an incredible 15 walks in 24 plate appearances during the week. He walked 4 times in two games (6/6 ) and a 6/2 game where Clearwater batters were given 16 free passes and had two other games with 3 walks each. Baron scored 9 runs during the week. He delivered a home run on 6/6 when they did give him something to hit 🤓

Strong CW Pitching continued this week :

LH Rafael Marcano - 5 perfect innings on 6/5 with 8 K’s 🔥🤛 … the 21 year old now has a 0.90 ERA and WHIP in 6 games ( 3 starts ) with 28 K’s and only 5 BB in 20 IP. Outstanding !

LH Jordi Martinez - 4 scoreless innings on 6/1 ... 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K’s & 3 2/3 IP on 6/6 ... 2 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K’s - 3.12 ERA in 6 games ( 3 starts ) with a 1.21 WHIP in 17 1/3 IP - 20 K’s & 5 BB

RH Fernando Lozano - 3 2/3 IP on 6/2 - 1 unearned R, 2 H, 0 BB, 6 K’s - 2.12 ERA in 7 games ( 17 IP ) with 20 K’s & 5 BB ... 1.00 WHIP

RH Cristian Hernandez - 4 IP on 6/2 - 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 3 K’s - 2.01 ERA in 6 games ( 5 starts ) with a 0.85 WHIP in 22 1/3 IP with 27 K’s & just 3 walks.

LH JP Woodward - 3 IP - 1 R, 3 H ... over his last four relief appearances ( 5 2/3 IP ) has allowed one and three hits. For the season he’s appeared in 11 games ( 13 2/3 IP ) posting a 2.63 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP with 16 K’s and 5 BB.

RH Mick Abel - went 3 2/3 scoreless innings on 6/3 allowing just 2 hits and a walk while striking out 6 batters. In his last four starts ( 12 2/3 IP ) he’s allowed 2 runs on 6 hits with 4 walks and 18 K’s. The talent is evident ... continued refinement of command will advance Mick up the ladder ... just 19 years old with a upper 90’s power arm 👍🔥

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
