8/20/23 : Week Twenty Minor League Review (8/14 to 8/20)

The seven teams went 21-20 for the week. They are a cumulative 346-269 for a winning percentage of .563. The four affiliates participating in split seasons are 107-78 (.578) in the second half.  All four full season clubs remain very much in the hunt for a second half division or league title and associated playoff spot in their respective leagues (Clearwater has already clinched a berth by winning the first half title for their division).

Aramis Garcia hit four home runs and knocked in eight runs for Lehigh Valley and Simon Muzziotti had a strong week. Tyler Phillips and Drew Hutchison each went seven innings in their starts and Nick Nelson went six in his. The IronPigs won four of their six games.

Oliver Dunn also hit four home runs during the week and drove in eight runs for Reading as they won three of seven against Somerset.

Jersey Shore got outstanding pitching again as they limited Asheville to just thirteen runs total in six games.  Mitch Neunborn performed the rare feat of an immaculate inning (three strikeouts on nine pitches) in Thursday’s game, he tossed five scoreless no hit frames that evening and combined with four relievers for a a one hit shutout, two walks and sixteen strikeouts.  It was the second shutout of the week for the BlueClaws. Nine pitchers gave up no runs in their outings during the week.  They won their series four games to two and are in a first place tie with Brooklyn for the second half division title with three weeks left to go in the regular season.

There are two regular season days left in the Complex League (FCL &DSL) schedules.  The FCL Phillies remain in the wild card playoff race but will have to win both of their remaining games and get help from other teams as they are in a tightly bunched group with the Tigers, Red Sox and Braves.

The Phillies White team in the Dominican Summer League clinched their third consecutive division title on Thursday. Their season record of 42-12 (.778) is the second best winning percentage in all of minor league baseball.  Since the Phillies Dominican Academy opened in 2017 and the Phillies White franchise (along with the Phillies Red club) was established the team has posted a cumulative 243-140 record (.634) and has never had a sub .500 season, in four of those years they’ve played at a .633 winning clip or better.  The Phillies Red franchise also has a cumulative winning record of 196-177 (.525).  Congrats to Academy Coordinator Manny Amador and Phillies White team manager Orlando Munoz along with all the players and supporting staff for their continuing success and best wishes as Team White advances to the eight team playoffs to defend the DSL championship they won last season.
