1/19/2021 : Phillies sign RHP David Paulino to minor league contract

The Phillies signed 26 year old RHP David Paulino to a minor league contract yesterday. Paulino pitched for Buffalo at the Triple A level in the Blue Jays system in 2019. He’s also appeared in 16 major league games from 2016 to 2018 with the Astros and Jays amassing 42 2/3 innings with 42 K’s and 12 walks. David pitched for Leones del Escondido this winter in the Dominican League and posted a 3-1 record in nine games with a 3.32 ERA in 19 IP with 28 K’s and 9 walks.

Throughout his career, he’s dealt with various injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2014 and elbow tendinitis in 2016 but now appears to be healthy. David served a suspension in 2017 for violating the PED policy. He features four pitches with the fastball and curveball reportedly his best offerings, as a starter the FB sits in the 91-95 mph range with the curve serving as his out pitch and also throws a changeup and slider. Paulino is noted for good command.

Originally signed by the Detroit Tigers out of the Dominican Republic in 2010, he was traded to Houston in 2013 and to Toronto in 2018 as part of the Ken Giles/Robert Osuna deal.

Early in his career with the Astros and Tigers I found notes that his fastball had been recorded as high as 97 mph and that he had excellent control. He’s a big fella at 6’6” 240 ... not sure if he’s been extended a big league ST invite by the Phillies or not or whether the plans are to use him as a starter or reliever ... he’s done both - 56 minor league starts in 65 games and 7 big league starts ... with the exception of one game he was pitching out of the bullpen in this year’s winter league action.

From a fan’s view welcome to the Phillies Mr. Paulino !

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
