12/1/22 : Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes - Pitchers - Part Four

Updated: Dec 4, 2022

I’ve entitled this series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” and will break down the presentations into defensive categories.  I intend to offer notes on every player I watched perform this past season that finished the 2022 season with the organization.

The initial set of articles was on catchers - we chatted about 18 receivers and posted three articles.  The next group was on Infielders - we chronicled 40 different players broken down into five postings.  The third series of articles ( a total of five ) were on 36 outfielders. So we continue - the fourth article in the series on pitchers  ⚾️🤓.

Thanks to Matt Winkleman ( Phillies Minor Thoughts ) for his diligent efforts in detailing most of the speed gun readings.

Edward Chirinos - 17 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 4/20/05 - signed as an international free agent 1/15/22 from Valencia, Venezuela - This Fan’s View - posted a 2.49 ERA in 13 appearances ( 25 1/3 IP ) with 33 K’s and 13 walks - 1.30 WHIP for Phillies Red in the 2022 Dominican Summer League.  We saw this young man pitch often via live stream - made quite a few multi inning relief appearances which bodes well for him as a potential starter going forward - generally gets after the hitter - throws strikes - 8 of his 13 walks came in four outings - only five walks in the other nine games he pitched in.  Has hop on the fastball and changeup looks deceptive. One to watch.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 88 to 93 mph - max 93 ), change up ( 85 to 87 mph ) and curve ( 73 to 79 mph ). 2023 Projection - likely returns for another season in the DSL with expanded innings.

Ty Collins - 21 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 8/29/01 - 2021 16th round draft selection - Glendale Community College - Glendale, CA - This Fan’s View - slender young man - has a very clean and repeatable delivery - very inexperienced as a pitcher - athletic performer who played primarily center field in high school - is in process of mastering secondary pitches - slider and curve and potentially a change up.  Arm speed is evident to develop into even higher velocity - has already touched 95 in a few outings - pitched in 9 FCL games ( 9 1/3 IP ) with 5 2/3 coming in the last month of the short season ( August ).  Best we saw him was on 8/15 when he struck out 4 in two scoreless frames vs Blue Jays - a glimpse of what might be.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 88 to 93 mph - max 95 ), slider ( 78 to 82 mph ) and curve ( 70 to 78 mph ). 2023 Projection - needs to build experience - likely in extended spring training with a eye towards Clearwater.

Gabriel Cotto - 22 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 5/15/00 - 2018 7th round draft selection - Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, Gurabo, Puerto Rico - This Fan’s View - made 17 starts ( 67 IP ) for Clearwater in his first full season assignment out of spring training.  Pitched well posting 70 K’s and 37 walks - June was a standout month - 5 starts ( 19 IP ) - 2.37 ERA with 19 K’s and 8 walks.  Is tall and lanky at 6’5” 175 - delivers from a 3/4 arm slot - hides ball well and has a slinging action to his delivery.  Change Up is an out pitch - same release point as fastball, has sinking movement.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 86 to 92 mph - max 93 ), slider ( 75 to 84 mph ), change up ( 75 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 72 to 78 mph ). 2023 Projection - will likely be part of the Jersey Shore opening day rotation.

Hans Crouse - 24 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 9/15/98 - acquired in trade with Rangers 7/30/21 - was Rangers 2017 2nd round draft selection - Dana Hills HS, Dana Point, CA - This Fan’s View - an injury riddled season for Hans in 2022 - made just 5 appearances with Lehigh Valley ( 3 in April & 2 in September ) spending the brunt of the year at the Complex in Clearwater rehabbing biceps tendinitis and elbow issues.  When he’s healthy the slider is his dominant pitch - has cutter like movement and big league level spin.  We saw him this past spring training in a triple A scrimmage where he dominated hitters - envisioned a breakout summer but the tendinitis prevailed.  Did return to action in September making two starts however stuff was flat and got hit hard.  Like-able young fella - hopefully can get back on track this coming year.   The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 92 mph - max 94 ), slider ( 83 to 84 mph ) and change up ( 85 to 86 mph ) - this year’s reads - has been up to 96 mph on fastball in prior years. 2023 Projection - if ready to go health wise will be a member of the Lehigh Valley rotation.

Jack Dallas - 23 years old -  - RHP - Birthdate : 12/18/98 - signed as an un-drafted free agent - Lamar University - This Fan’s View - his brother Chad pitches in the Blue Jays organization.  Jack was the closer for Lamar - predominantly uses his fastball and slider but plans on incorporating the change up more - slider is his out pitch.  Appeared in 6 games with Clearwater and posted a 0.00 ERA in 7 2/3 innings with 10 K’s and 5 walks.  Went 2 2/3 innings in his final appearance of the season. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 86 to 91 mph - max 92 ), slider ( 78 to 83 mph ) and change up ( 80 to 83 mph ).  2023 Projection - a roster spot with Jersey Shore out of spring camp is within reach

Chris Devenski -  32  years old - RHP - Birthdate : 11/13/90 - signed as a minor league free agent from DBacks - 8/29/22 - This Fan’s View - veteran pitcher that was signed as depth - threw in 9 games with Lehigh Valley ( 8 2/3 IP ) - 1.04 ERA with 11 K’s & 3 walks - debuted with Phillies on September 27th and pitched in 3 games ( 4 IP ).  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 93 to 94 mph - max 95 ), slider ( 80 to 82 mph ), change up ( 80 to 83 mph ) and curve ( 73 to 76 mph ) - data from Baseball Savant.  2023 Projection - elected free agency - signed with Angels

Nick Duron -  26 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 1/30/96 - signed as a minor league free agent 1/9/22 from Mariners - 2015 31st round draft selection - Red Sox - Clark Community College - This Fan’s View - had a good 2022 season with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs - 2.77 ERA in 52 appearances ( 48 2/3 IP ) with 63 K’s and 29 walks - 45 hits allowed - made his major league debut on 7/13/22 in Toronto as one of the Covid replacement call ups - threw a scoreless frame - 2 hits, 1 K - big arm pitcher who we took notice to right away in spring training camp - converted 7 of 9 saves for the Iron Pigs and was consistently used in back ends of games - has the ability to throw the ball past hitters - upper 90’s velo and hits 100 regularly - cutter and slider as offsets.  Harnessing command is the key as gets in jams with walks and pitch location but has the stuff to be a major league contributor.

The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 95 to 99 mph - max 100 ), slider ( 87 to 89 mph ) and cutter ( 86 to 91 mph ).

2023 Projection - elected minor league free agency - he’s one I suggest re-signing
