5/5/21 : Minor League Roundup

Did ya know 🧐 ... in last night’s Clearwater Threshers/Lakeland Flying Tigers game the Automated Ball/Strike ( ABS ) system was used ... results where that 60 % of the pitches were called strikes and 40 % balls ... there were 11 combined free passes issued in the contest

In the other three Phillies affiliates games with humans calling balls and strikes ...

Jersey Shore - 61 % strikes 39 % balls - 13 combined free passes

Reading - 63 % strikes - 37 % balls - 8 combined free passes

Lehigh Valley - 66 % strikes - 34 % balls - 6 combined free passes

Just numbers to ponder is all ... no one barked at the umpire in Clearwater ... yes they did ... it was $ beer night 😂

Tonight’s Phillies Affiliate games

Triple A East League - Lehigh Valley 8 ( 2-0 ) Rochester 7 ( 0-2 )

Summary :

The Iron Pigs jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings but Rochester plated seven runs in the 4th thru 6th innings to take the lead. Lehigh Valley tied the score at eight apiece with two in the eighth inning.

Lehigh Valley won the game on a wild pitch as Josh Stephen crossed the plate ... he had walked to start the inning, advanced to second on a balk, to third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch ... now that’s a wild ending 🤪

At Bat :

SS CJ Chatham had three hits including a double. CF Travis Jankowski had two hits and two walks, scored twice ... 3B/2B Luke Williams had three hits including a double and had two RBIs. Jean Segura doubled and was HBP - he scored twice in two plate appearances - he’s ready to come back to the show.

Notes : Infielder Sal Gozzo was added to the Iron Pigs roster, promoted from Reading, prior to the game. Mickey Moniak and Scott Kingery were added to the Phillies active roster leaving a void at Lehigh Valley. Veteran infielder Ruben Tejada was signed to a minor league contract and presumably will be added to the Iron Pigs roster.

Double A NorthEast League - Erie 14 ( 2-0 ) Reading 2 ( 0-2 )

Summary :

Erie plated six runs in the third inning including a grand slam home run and never looked back. They also scored six times in the ninth inning and had another grand slam.

On The Hill :

RH Francisco Morales was popping the mitt early in the 96-98 range but control and command issues led to an early exit ... 2 2/3 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 4 K’s

RH Joel Cesar allowed two inherited runners to score in the third inning on a grand slam - 1 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K was his own pitching line beyond the two inherited runs

High A East League - Hudson Valley 8 ( 1-1 ) Jersey Shore 0 ( 1-1 )

Summary :

Hudson Valley plated three in the second inning and never looked back. Their pitchers held the Blue Claws to just two hits.

On The Hill :

RH Kevin Gowdy struggled with command - 2 1/3 IP, 4 R - 3 earned, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 Wild Pitch, 4 K’s - 57 pitches - 29 strikes.

LH Brian Marconi went 1 2/3 scoreless - 0 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s ... good job pitching out of an inherited third inning jam.

RH Noah Skirrow - 2 2/3 IP - 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K’s - 54 pitches - 34 strikes - continues his dominance as shown in minor league camp 💪. Pro debut tonight

SS Bryson Stott walked three times in four plate appearances

Low A SouthEast League - Clearwater 13 ( 1-1 ) Lakeland 11 ( 1-1 ) 11 innings

Summary :

A back and forth contest, Lakeland went up by three runs after three frames. Clearwater scored five in their fourth - the key blow a two run double by Johan Rojas. Lakeland tied the game in the sixth and went ahead by one in the seventh. The Threshers plated two in the bottom of the eighth after walks loaded the bases and a wild pitch then allowed two to score 😳. Lakeland tied the game with a solo homer in the ninth inning.

The Flying Tigers scored three in the top of the eleventh. The Threshers would not be denied however as 1B DJ Stewart hit a walk-off grand slam home run for the win !

On The Hill :

RH Mick Abel went 2 1/3 innings - 4 R - 3 earned, 4 H, 2 BB, 2 K’s - fastball was in 96-98 range early innings and then 94-96 near the end ... left a few pitches up when the Flying Tigers scored three in the third - they hit em hard. Chalk it up to a learning experience ... definitely has good stuff, ball moves with cutting action at high velocity.

RH Alejandro Made faced three batters ... 1 BB, 2 K’s to end the third inning

RH Dylan Castaneda went 3 2/3 innings - 3 R, 4 H, 6 BB, 3 K’s, 1 Wild Pitch - 58 pitches - 27 strikes ... FB sat 91-92 ... battled throwing strikes

1B DJ Stewart hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eleventh inning 👏.

Notes :

Johan Rojas has a really quick bat and the ball jumps ... in his first AB he appeared to get jammed but still drove the ball to the warning track in center field ... definitely one to be excited about. Catcher Abrahan Gutierrez threw out four would be base stealers at second base.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
