8/5/2020 : Around the Horn - The Day in MLB


Game recaps, fun facts from around MLB ( games played on 8/5 ) …

Blue Jays 2 ( 4-5 ) Braves 1 ( 8-5 )


Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu went five scoreless frames ( 1 H, 3 BB, 8 K’s ) and four relievers allowed just two hits the rest of the way behind him. Bo Bichette had two hits for Toronto and scored a run ... Cavan Biggio and Danny Jansen had the two RBIs.


Adam Duvall had two of Atlanta’s three hits in the game ... the Braves bullpen tossed 4 1/3 innings of perfect baseball behind starter Sean Newcomb who went 4 2/3 innings.


Indians 2 ( 7-6 ) Reds 0 ( 5-7 )


The Indians Mike Clevinger battled control but still dominated for 5 2/3 innings allowing just two hits while walking five batters ... he struck out four. Four Cleveland relievers allowed just one hit the rest of the way and Closer Brad Hand picked up his fourth save. Cesar Hernandez had a hit, two walks, and an RBI for the Tribe.


The Reds used five pitchers ... Left Fielder Shogo Akiyama had the only extra base hit of the game ... a double.


Twins 5 ( 10-2 ) Pirates 2 ( 2-10 )


Twins starter Robby Dobnak - a Pirates fan as a youngster growing up in the Pittsburgh area got to pitch in PNC park and he excelled ... he threw six shutout innings allowing just three hits and a walk to post his second win. Max Kepler hit a three run home run in the ninth inning to seal the win and Marwin Gonzalez had two hits and two RBIs.


Trevor Williams was a hard luck loser for the Pirates as he pitched very well going seven innings allowing one run on three hits and one walk ... Josh Bell accounted for all of the Pirates runs with a two run homer in the ninth ... he had three hits in total including a double.



Red Sox 5 ( 4-8 ) Rays 0 ( 5-7 )


Boston’s starting pitcher Martin Perez went five innings ( 4 H, 3 BB, 4 K’s ) and four relievers ( Colten Brewer, Austin Brice, Matt Barnes & Brandon Workman ) each threw a hitless inning to finish the shutout. Michael Chavis had three hits including a two run home run ... Alex Verdugo also hit a two run home run and Xander Bogaerts had two hits.


Yandy Diaz had two hits for the slumping Rays.



Mets 3 ( 5-8 ) Nationals 1 ( 4-5 )


The Mets Rick Porcello went seven strong innings ( 1 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 4 K’s ) for the win and Seth Lugo tossed two perfect frames for the save. Brandon Nimmo walked three times and scored twice out of the leadoff spot and Dominic Smith had two RBIs.


Washington’s Max Scherzer went just one inning ... he left the game with a hamstring injury. Juan Soto had two hits including a double ... the Nationals used seven pitchers in the game.


Marlins 1 ( 4-1 ) Orioles 0 ( 5-5 ) - seven innings


Elieser Hernandez went 4 1/3 innings allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out five batters. Nick Vincent ( 1 1/3 IP ), Richard Bleier ( 1/3 IP ) and Brandon Kintzler ( 1 IP ) finished the shutout. Brian Anderson hit a home run in the second inning for the game’s only run.


Alex Cobb went five innings ( 1 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 7 K’s ) for the Orioles with Miguel Castro tossing two hitless innings behind him.


Marlins 2 ( 5-1 ) Orioles 1 ( 5-6 ) - seven innings


The Marlins parched together a bullpen game with five hurlers combining to allow just four hits ... Brian Moran got the win with a scoreless inning striking out three batters.


Jonathan Villar and Jon Berti scored the runs for Miami and Brian Anderson and Jesus Aguilar had the RBIs.


Asher Wojciechowski went five innings ( 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s ) for the Orioles. Jose Iglesias doubled.


Mariners 7 ( 5-8 ) Angels 6 ( 4-8 )


Kyle Seager became just the fourth player in Mariners history to hit 200 career home runs when he hit a two run dinger in the third inning. Seager had two hits and scored twice. Dylan Moore had three hits and scored twice while Austin Nola hit two doubles with two RBIs and Kyle Lewis had two knocks.


Marco Gonzalez went seven strong for Seattle ( 3 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 7 K’s ) to post his second win of the season.


Mike Trout hit two home runs for the Angels and drove in four runs ... Max Stassi and David Fletcher each hit solo home runs.


Dodgers 7 ( 9-4 ) Padres 6 ( 7-6 )


Joc Pederson hit two home runs, drove in five and scored twice to lead the Dodgers offense. Chris Taylor had two knocks including a triple. Five LA hurlers pitched in the game with close Kenley Jansen earning his fourth save albeit he had his struggles in the ninth frame ( 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB ).


Fernando Tatis Jr hit a two run homer, had two hits, a walk and scored twice for the Padres out of the leadoff slot. Wil Myers also had two hits including a home run and scored twice.


Diamondbacks 14 ( 4-8 ) Astros 7 ( 6-5 )


Arizona hit four home runs ( David Peralta, Kole Calhoun, Nick Ahmed and Eduardo Escobar ) as the club pounded sixteen hits ... Ketel Marte had three hits and five of his teammates had two apiece with all nine players in the lineup getting at least one knock.


The Astros also hit four home runs ( George Springer, Kyle Tucker, Abraham Toro and Yuli Gurriel ) with Toro and Carlos Correa getting two hits apiece.


A’s 6 ( 8-4 ) Rangers 4 ( 3-7 )


Matt Olsen hit two home runs, walked once, had three RBIs and scored twice to lead the A’s ... Ramon Laureano also homered as did Catcher Austin Allen who hit a two run tater in the seventh inning which was his first major league tater !


Elvis Andrus and Tod Frazier each had two hits for the Rangers ... Shin-Soo Choo hit his third home run of the season, he led off the game with it.


Giants 4 ( 6-7 ) Rockies 3 ( 8-3 )


Brandon Belt doubled and hit a three run home run and scored twice to lead the Giants. Pablo Sandoval chipped in with two hits. Five SF pitchers completed the win with closer Trevor Gott recording his third save with a scoreless ninth inning.


Nolan Arenado hit his third home run of the season for the Rockies.


Brewers 1 ( 4-5 ) White Sox 0 ( 7-5 )


The Brewers Adrian Houser went seven innings for the win allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five batters. David Phelps and Josh Hader pitched an inning each behind him to finish the shutout.


Eric Sogard accounted for the game’s only run with a third inning RBI.


Dallas Keuchel pitched very well for the White Sox ( 7 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 8 K’s ) and Codi Heuer threw two perfect innings with three K’s behind him.


Danny Mendick had the only extra base hit in the game , a double for Chicago.



Cubs 6 ( 10-2 ) Royals 1 ( 3-10 )


Chicago’s Yu Darvish was on his game once again as he pitched seven innings ( 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s ) to post his second win of the season. Jeremy Jeffries and Colin Rea each tossed a perfect inning to close out the win.


Four Cubs ( Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez and Victor Caratini ) had two hit games.


Maikel Franco doubled for the Royals, their only extra base hit. They were held to five hits in total.


Phillies 11 ( 2-3 ) Yankees 7 (8-2 ) - Seven Innings



Yankees 3 ( 9-2 ) Phillies 1 ( 2-4 ) - Seven Innings
