Updated: Dec 4, 2022

I’ve entitled this series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” and will break down the presentations into defensive categories.  I intend to offer notes on every player I watched perform this past season that finished the 2022 season with the organization.

So we continue - the fifth article in the series on pitchers  ⚾️🤓.

Thanks to Matt Winkleman ( Phillies Minor Thoughts ) for his diligent efforts in detailing most of the speed gun readings.

Colton Eastman - 26 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 8/22/96 - 2018 4th round draft selection - Cal State Fullerton - This Fan’s View -  pitched at both Reading and Lehigh Valley in 2022 - 3.26 ERA in 9 games ( 47 IP ) at Reading and 5.83 ERA in 16 games ( 54 IP ) - 4.63 overall ERA in 101 IP - has been a strike thrower throughout his career however that waned a bit this past summer - opened the season with LHV - transferred to Reading and finished with LHV - had a good outing in his last start of the season on 9/1 - 5 IP - allowed just one run.  Uses a four pitch mix to keep hitters off balance - pitch ability is his ticket. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 87 to 91 mph - max 92 ), slider ( 80 to 84 mph ), change up ( 79 to 86 mph ) and curve ( 74 to 78 mph ).  2023 Projection - a return to Lehigh Valley competing for a rotation spot

Kent Emmanuel - 30 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 6/4/92 - claimed off waivers from Astros 11/19/21 - This Fan’s View - spent a good portion of the season at the Complex rehabbing from UCL surgery performed in 2021 on his elbow - he had TJ surgery previously in 2015.  Kent returned to game action on June 9th on rehab assignment with the Clearwater Threshers - he then pitched for Reading and Lehigh Valley - made 10 starts for the Iron Pigs ( 49 1/3 IP ) posting a 2.37 ERA with 44 K’s and a minuscule 6 walks - shut down on August 31st when he left the game after recording just one out - grabbed his shoulder when departing - I chatted with him later at the Complex and he told me he was fine - was just a scare is all.  He’s a big fella at 6’4” who has a “herky jerky” delivery, makes it tough for the batters to pick up his pitches.  Features a plus change-up.  Pitches with outstanding command and can throw all four pitches in his repertoire for strikes at any point in the count.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 88 to 91 mph - max 92 ), splitter ( 76 to 79 mph ), change up ( 82 to 84 mph ) and curve ( 74 to 77 mph ) - velo reads from baseball savant.  2023 Projection - elected free agency

Jaydenn Estanista - 21 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 10/3/01 - signed 11/8/19 as an international free agent - Willemstad, Curacao - This Fan’s View -  when scouts gather en masse behind the backstop of home plate at the complex with radar guns in tow you know that a pitcher of intrigue is throwing.  We first saw Jaydenn in 2021 Fall Instructs from beyond the outfield gates but even from afar it was evident he was producing a lot of swings and misses.  He packed on quite a bit of muscle to his 6’3” frame this summer and with that the fast ball climbed to a regular range of 93 to 96 mph and even touched 97 mph.  It’s not just the velocity that plays but the movement - it jumps.   He’s working on both the curve and slider as secondaries.  The young man from Curacao doesn’t have a great deal of experience so the talent is still relatively raw yet there’s no denying the upside once you’ve seen him in action.  Continued work this offseason on strength and weight training seems to be the docket - this kid can be a really good one.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 93 to 96 mph - max 97 ), slider ( 83 to 84 mph ) and curve ( 75 to 79 mph ).   2023 Projection - will break spring camp with either Clearwater or Jersey Shore.

Braeden Fausnaught - 23 years old - LHP  - Birthdate : 7/29/99 - signed as an un-drafted free agent 8/1/22 - West Chester University - This Fan’s View - a very prominent coach told me that Braeden features a low nineties fastball with deception, slower curve and has a plus changeup - strong young man who will push higher velocities as strength improves even more.  I’ve yet to see him pitch in person but we have chatted on multiple occasions - pleasant fella who’s eager to learn and show what he can do as a pro - told me that “ Can’t take anything for granted - It’s a blessing to have this opportunity.  My level of focus and execution has to be higher to match and beat the level of hitters that I’ll face.”  He’s a graduate of my college alma mater.  Pitched for the Trenton Thunder in the MLB Draft League before signing with the Phillies - posted a 2.45 ERA in 11 IP.  Appeared in two FCL games - threw two perfect innings with three K’s - participated in Fall Instructs and the follow on strength and conditioning camp.  The speed gun : fastball - sinker & 4 seamer ( sits in a range of 89 to 92 mph - max 94 ), cutter ( 85 to 87 mph ), change up ( 84 to 87 mph ) and curve ( 78 to 80 mph ). 2023 Projection - will compete for a full season roster spot in spring camp.

Jordan Fowler - 23 years old -  RHP - Birthdate : 3/9/99 - signed as an un-drafted free agent 6/14/20 - Central Missouri University - This Fan’s View - made 19 appearances ( 54 1/3 IP ) with Clearwater posting a very solid 2.65 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 51 K’s and 11 walks.  Began the season in extended spring training - excelled when assigned to the Threshers on 5/5 - in his first nine appearances he threw 21 2/3 innings - 1.66 ERA with 20 K’s and 4 walks - usually pitched in relief but routinely threw multi innings ( three or more IP in 12 of his 19 games ).  We saw him pitch both with the Threshers and in Spring Training.  He’s a strike thrower with four pitches - can throw all over the plate.  Is now pitching for the Adelaide Giants in the Australian Baseball League.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 88 to 91 mph - max 92 ), slider ( 76 to 82 mph ), change up ( 78 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 73 to 77 mph ).   2023 Projection - should move up to Jersey Shore at the least out of spring camp.

Carlos Francisco - 23 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 7/2/99 - 2019 28th round draft selection - Hillsborough Community College - Florida -  This Fan’s View - big arm reliever who appeared in 41 games for Jersey Shore in 2022 totaling 47 1/3 IP posting 55 K’s while walking 28 - 5.13 ERA in his second year with the BlueClaws - has good life and movement with his four seam fastball - was outstanding in 12 appearances from 7/24 to 8/28 - 13 IP - 0.00 ERA - 20 K’s - 6 walks - 0.54 WHIP - runs like that are what make him an under the radar pitcher of intrigue - we’ve always liked his “stuff” and makeup - just waiting for a breakout - could be next year.   The speed gun : fastball - sinker & 4 seamer ( sits in a range of 90 to 95 mph - max 96 ), change up ( 85 to 90 mph ), curve ( 80 to 81 mph ) and slider ( 78 to 86 mph ).  2023 Projection - will be in the mix for a bullpen spot with Reading.

Jace Fry - 29 years old -  - LHP  - Birthdate : 7/9/93 - signed as a minor league free agent 6/26/22 from Nationals - This Fan’s View  - appeared in 18 games ( 16 IP ) and posted a 6.75 ERA for Lehigh Valley - all appearances were one inning or less. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 91 mph - max 92 ), cutter ( 82 to 85 mph ) and change up ( 84 to 86 mph ). 2023 Projection - elected minor league free agency
