I’ve entitled this series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” and will break down the presentations into defensive categories. I intend to offer notes on every player I watched perform this past season that finished the 2022 season with the organization.
The initial set of articles was on catchers - we chatted about 18 receivers and posted three articles. The next group was on Infielders - we chronicled 40 different players broken down into five postings. The third series of articles ( a total of five ) were on 36 outfielders. I will list below the article links to each of the group notes previously published if ya missed them.

So we continue - the sixth article in the series on pitchers ⚾️🤓.
Thanks to Matt Winkleman ( Phillies Minor Thoughts ) for his diligent efforts in detailing most of the speed gun readings.
Alex Garbrick - 24 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 6/4/98 - 2021 17th round draft selection - University of South Carolina - Upstate - This Fan’s View - 32 appearances with the Clearwater Threshers in 2022 - 43 2/3 IP - 56 K’s, 31 BB - 5.36 ERA - hard throwing hurler who will take the ball whenever asked - battles control but when he’s throwing strikes has swing and miss stuff - outstanding months of April ( 0.00 ERA in 5 games - 10 IP - 15 K’s - 7 BB ) and June ( 1.59 ERA in 8 games - 11 1/3 IP, 10 K’s, 7 BB ) - 11.54 K/9 rate but a 6.39 BB/9 rate as well. Here’s a tidbit - Alex played in the 2011 Little League World Series for Keystone Little League representing the Mid-Atlantic District. He’s from the Lock Haven, PA area. If he can harness the command can move up the ladder quickly. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 96 mph - max 97 ), slider ( 79 to 84 mph ), change up ( 83 to 88 mph ) and curve ( 78 to 84 mph ). 2023 Projection - Jersey Shore or higher out of spring camp - can break out with a strong camp.
Eric Garcia - 22 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 5/12/00 - signed as an un-drafted free agent 8/1/22 - Eastern Florida State JC - This Fan’s View - we first met Eric this summer at the Complex - he’s a big fella at 6’5” - has an infectious smile and pleasant personality. He pitched in 4 FCL games ( 3 2/3 IP - struggled in one which inflated the ERA ) - played at Melbourne High School in Florida - signed as a reliever - velo reads we’ve registered are likely lower than what he’s capable of - just haven’t seen him enough to comment fully on mix and spin either. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 92 mph - max 92 ), change up ( 84 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 80 to 82 mph ). 2023 Projection - will compete in spring camp for a Clearwater roster spot
Tristan Garnett - 24 years old LHP - Birthdate : 3/29/98 - signed as an un-drafted free agent - Cal State Domingues Hills - 7/20/21 - This Fan’s View - Tristan is a big fella ( 6’6” ) - when he gets on top of his deliveries it’s an intimidating pitching style, even at a three quarter arm slot his length is a weapon. Had a very good 2022 season as a reliever with Clearwater and Jersey Shore posting a 1.89 combined ERA between them in 22 appearances ( 33 1/3 IP ) with 49 K’s and only 5 walks - the brunt of his outings were with the Threshers ( 19 games - 29 IP - 43 K’s - 5 BB - 1.86 ERA - 0.86 WHIP ) before being promoted to Jersey Shore on August 29th. He’s from the Portland, Oregon area - we met his dad at the complex this summer as well - very nice folks. The stuff can play, especially as a left hander with downward tilt - he was in both Fall Instructs and the follow on strength and conditioning camp - hard worker. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 87 to 92 mph - max 94 ), slider ( 80 to 86 mph ), change up ( 77 to 81 mph ) and curve ( 71 to 72 mph ). 2023 Projection - a return to Jersey Shore out of spring camp seems likely however Reading is within reach - a strike thrower - that plays
Drew Garrett - 22 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 6/20/00 - 2022 19th round draft selection - University of Missouri - This Fan’s View - went directly to work with the rehab group after being drafted coming off of Tommy John surgery. He’s 6’6” and has high velo stuff ( upper nineties ) with above average spin rates on both the heater and the curve. Control has been an issue in his amateur career - stuff is overpowering - will need to harness the zone. Coach Hergert’s view : “Loose, whippy arm that if we can get in the zone more can be a premier reliever in the near future.” 2023 Projection - likely won’t see game action till mid season.
Maikel Garrido - 22 years old LHP - Birthdate : 1/24/00 - signed as an international free agent - 2/19/18 - Tucacas, Venezuela - This Fan’s View - we first saw Maikel pitch in the Gulf Coast League ( 2019 ) where he showed a capacity to deliver high velocity fastballs but lacked control. Spent the majority of 2022 with the rehab team while also refining mechanics - pitched in 4 FCL games in August - 4 2/3 IP - 5 K’s - 4 walks - has strikeout stuff with high velo and spin but has always battled command and control. If he can gain consistency in release point with a repeatable delivery he has the goods to move up the ladder. He’s a battler who wants to succeed - can be really good but has to throw strikes. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 94 to 97 mph - max 98 ), slider ( 92 to 95 mph ) and change up ( 87 to 89 mph ). 2023 Projection - needs a strong spring performance to gain a full season roster spot out of camp
Jeffrey German - 18 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 10/26/04 - signed as an international free agent 1/15/22 - Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - This Fan’s View - had a strong 2022 campaign pitching in the DSL for the Phillies Red squad - 4-1 record with a 2.17 ERA in 11 appearances ( 10 starts ) - 46 K’s, 21 BB in 45 2/3 IP - 1.14 WHIP as a 17 year old during the season - big fella at 6’3” - we saw him via live stream on multiple occasions - pitch ability was evident - used all of his pitches with curve ball standing out - big looping break - we think he’s one to watch grow - like his mechanics which were repeatable and his enthusiasm for playing. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 86 to 89 mph - max 91 ), change up ( 82 to 86 mph ) and curve ( 73 to 76 mph ). 2023 Projection - likely returns to the DSL for another full season
Kyle Glogoski - 23 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 1/6/99 - signed as an international free agent - 1/8/18 - Auckland, New Zealand- This Fan’s View - had an outstanding 2019 season recording a 1.98 ERA in 80 1/3 IP at Lakewood and Clearwater. The lack of baseball activity thereafter hurt his development but he still broke 2021 spring camp as a member of the Reading rotation. He went on the injured list on 6/12/21 with an elbow strain and didn’t return to action the balance of the summer. Opened the 2022 season in extended spring training before joining Jersey Shore on May 24th - appeared in 16 games with the Blue Claws ( 12 starts ) and posted a 2.77 ERA in 65 IP with 75 K’s and 20 walks - 1.17 WHIP. Finished the season in a high note with two strong starts ( 12 IP - 0.75 ERA - 5 H, 2 BB, 14 K’s ). Is now pitching for the Auckland Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League. Velo was down this year as compared to 2019 but Kyle knows how to pitch and read hitters - velo will pop back up with more innings under his belt. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 87 to 91 mph - max 92 ), change up ( 78 to 81 mph ) and curve ( 72 to 77 mph ). 2023 Projection - was taken in the minor league rule 5 draft by the Reds
