Updated: Dec 5, 2022

I’ve entitled this series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” and will break down the presentations into defensive categories.  I intend to offer notes on every player I watched perform this past season that finished the 2022 season with the organization.

The initial set of articles was on catchers - we chatted about 18 receivers and posted three articles.  The next group was on Infielders - we chronicled 40 different players broken down into five postings.  The third series of articles ( a total of five ) were on 36 outfielders. So we continue - the seventh article in the series on pitchers  ⚾️🤓.

Thanks to Matt Winkleman ( Phillies Minor Thoughts ) for his diligent efforts in detailing most of the speed gun readings.

Ofreidy Gomez - 27 years old -  RHP - Birthdate : 7/6/95 - signed as a minor league free agent 4/12/22 from White Sox - This Fan’s View  - fastball can seem to be at times un-hittable - late life and arm side run.  The curve can also be a strikeout pitch - comes in hard with glove side break.  Excelled at Reading - 1.35 ERA in 14 games ( 20 IP ) with 28 K’s & 7 walks - struggled to find consistency at Lehigh Valley - had six outings out of 24 that ballooned his ERA to 8.49 in 23 1/3 IP - also lost command - walked 26 batters.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 92 to 96 mph - max 97 ), slider ( x to x mph ), splitter ( 87 to 88 mph ) and curve ( 78 to 79 mph ) - velo reads from 2080 baseball - is now pitching for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League - 2023 Projection - elected minor league free agency - signed with Orioles 12/5/22

Luis Gonzalez - 17 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 7/15/05 - signed as an international free agent 1/15/22 - Barquisimeto, Venezuela - This Fan’s View - started 11 games ( 51 IP ) posting a 3.71 ERA for Phillies Red in 2022 DSL action.  Struck out 30 batters, walked 5 and hit 5 others.  Best game we saw him was on 7/29 when he went 6 innings - no earned runs, 4 hits, 0 walks and 5 strikeouts - moved the ball around that day - looked like a veteran pitcher - it’s only one outing but it made me put him on this list 🤓 - will follow to see how he advances next season.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 86 to 90 mph - max 91 ), change up ( 81 to 86 mph ) and curve ( 75 to 78 mph ).   2023 Projection - likely repeats in the DSL given his age

Mavis Graves - 19 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 11/20/03 - 2022 6th round draft selection - Eastside HS, Taylor’s, South Carolina - This Fan’s View  - has yet to pitch in a pro game - a big fella at 6’4” - we did see him in a live BP session during the summer - has a big breaking hook - low nineties fastball ( will pick up velo as he gains strength ) and a change up.  We met him during summer camp - reminds us a lot of Ben Brown in appearance - he’s a lefty whereas Ben pitches right handed however Ben started his career in a similar manner - velo bumped significantly as he grew into his body - Mavis has a very similar build. 2023 Projection - likely opens in extended spring training and pitches in the FCL during the summer.

Daniel Harper - 23 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 6/1/99 - 2022 17th round draft selection - University of Kentucky - This Fan’s View - pitched in the MLB Draft League for State College in 8 games ( 9 2/3 IP ) posting 3 saves - 11 K’s, 4 walks.  Appeared in 7 games with Clearwater ( 8 1/3 IP ) recording a 1.08 ERA with 7 K’s and 3 walks.  A reliever throughout his collegiate career he’s got back end of the game experience which has set him up well for his pro career.  Doesn’t blink in pressure situations and has three pitches with good movement and pro level velocity to record outs.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 96 mph - max 96 ), slider ( 84 to 85 mph ), cutter ( 88 to 91 mph ) - 2023 Projection - likely breaks spring camp with Jersey Shore

Buddy Hayward - 24 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 10/15/98 - signed as an un-drafted amateur free agent - 6/19/20 - Harvard University - This Fan’s View - 6’6” right hander broke spring camp with Clearwater after spending the first year and a half of his pro career rehabbing from TJ surgery.  Pitched in 6 games ( 8 1/3 IP ) - 13 K’s, 4 walks - 3.24 ERA in April before returning to the rehab process - returned to game action in June with the FCL Phillies and pitched in 3 games before shutting down again in early July.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 87 to 94 mph - max 96 ), slider ( 83 to 87 mph ), change up ( 85 to 87 mph ) and cutter ( 85 to 88 mph ). 2023 Projection - dependent on health - return to full season play

Josh Hendrickson - 25 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 9/18/97 - 2019 38th round draft selection - San Diego University - This Fan’s View - Josh had a very strong 2021 campaign - accumulated 95 2/3 IP and an overall 3.57 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.  He’s the epitome of a “crafty left hander” - missed most of the 2022 season with arm issues - spent the majority of it with the rehab team at the Complex - returned to action on 8/2 and pitched in 5 rehab appearances with the FCL Phillies/ Clearwater Threshers and Jersey Shore BlueClaws.  Activated by the Reading Fightins on September 1st - pitched in 3 games ( 14 IP ) to finish the year.  Is generally a strike thrower that knows how to pitch with a four pitch mix.   The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 87 to 90 mph - max 91 ), slider ( 76 to 81 mph ), change up ( 81 to 84 mph ) and curve ( 71 to 74 mph ). - 2023 Projection - will compete for a rotation spot with either Reading or Lehigh Valley in spring camp.

Jonh Henriquez - 23 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 10/30/99 - signed as an international free agent 6/7/22 from San Francisco de Marcaris, Dominican Republic - This Fan’s View - We’ve only seen him pitch once in person - in a live BP session during Fall Instructs but the stuff was so electric it was a wow moment.  The fastball has rising life, velocity and movement and the slider was biting - we’ve seen a lot of pitchers throw but few show stuff that jumps at you in a first impression like what we saw from Henriquez.  Jonh pitched for the DSL Red team this summer in 5 games and struck out 7 batters while walking 4 in 6 IP.  He converted 2 of 3 save opportunities.  A walk on to the academy this summer he just might become a great discovery. We expect to see him stateside this spring and in the mix for a full season assignment - if he continues to throw like what we saw this fall then it could become a quick climb up the ladder.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 94 to 97 mph - max 97 ) and slider ( 79 to 83 mph ) - 2023 Projection - expect to see him stateside - with a strong spring camp could be assigned to a full season roster - likely spends some time in extended spring training before that.
