12/8/22 : Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes - Pitchers - Part 10

I’ve entitled this series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” and will break down the presentations into defensive categories.  I intend to offer notes on every player I watched perform this past season that finished the 2022 season with the organization.

The initial set of articles was on catchers - we chatted about 18 receivers and posted three articles.  The next group was on Infielders - we chronicled 40 different players broken down into five postings.  The third series of articles ( a total of five ) were on 36 outfielders. I will list below the article links to each of the group notes previously published if ya missed them.

So we continue - the tenth article in the series on pitchers  ⚾️🤓.

Thanks to Matt Winkleman ( Phillies Minor Thoughts ) for his diligent efforts in detailing most of the speed gun readings.

Ethan Lindow - 24 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 10/15/98 - 2017 5th round draft selection - Locust Grove High School, Locust Grove, Georgia - This Fan’s View - Ethan is the ultimate command and control artist - his fastball velocity is generally lower nineties but he gets excellent pitch movement and deception as all of his deliveries come out of the same arm slot - slider, change up and curve.  The change up is a put away pitch.  He posted a 3.70 combined ERA in 27 appearances ( 19 starts ) with High A Jersey Shore and AA Reading amassing 116 2/3 IP with 98 K’s and 30 BB. In his career he’s pitched 410 innings with 396 K’s and 105 BB ( 3.77 K/BB ratio ).  The term “crafty lefty” used to be a recurring phrase in pro baseball and I remember the likes of Randy Jones, Randy Wolf, etc that had quite a bit of success in their big league careers.  Was the winner of the 2019 Paul Owens Award when he posted a 2.52 ERA in 110 2/3 IP at the A level of play. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 87 to 91 mph - max 92 ), slider ( 79 to 86 mph ), change up ( 77 to 83 mph ) and curve ( 71 to 76 mph ). 2023 Projection - should compete in spring camp for a Lehigh Valley rotation spot.

Victor Lopez - 23 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 9/2/99 - signed as an international free agent - 3/30/19 - Tenares, Dominican Republic - This Fan’s View -  pitched in 22 games ( 31 1/3 IP ) with Clearwater in 2022 - 31 K’s, 12 BB - 1.50 WHIP - 6.03 ERA

has a five pitch mix - generally relies on cutter and curve as primary offerings.  Was a starter in 2019 in the DSL.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 88 to 92 mph - max 94 ), cutter ( 80 to 84 mph ), change up ( 82 to 88 mph ) and slider/curve ( 77 to 83 mph ). 2023 Projection - will likely compete for a A level roster spot in spring camp.

Fernando Lozano - 22 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 1/11/00 - signed as an international free agent - 4/25/19 - Ensenada Baja California, Mexico - This Fan’s View - was an innings eater this past summer appearing in 20 FCL games and tossing 48 innings including 16 IP with the Threshers at the start of the season.  Command is key and pitch ability - generally will make the batters put the ball in play - a cerebral pitcher who knows how to read hitters and adjust during games.  We like his moxy, mechanics and approach. Is playing winter ball in the Mexican League. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 85 to 91 mph - max 92 ), slider ( 75 to 85 mph ), change up ( 78 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 78 to 83 mph ). 2023 Projection - will compete for a full season roster spot in spring camp.

Alex McFarlane - 21 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 6/9/01 - 2022 4th round draft selection - University of Miami - This Fan’s View - made three starts for the Clearwater Threshers - 8 IP - 12 K’s, 3 BB - 6’4” angular build - top two pitches are high velo fastball and hard slider - both strikeout pitches.  Pitched primarily as a reliever in college focusing on his two dominant pitches but thoughts are his change-up and curve ball give him a full arsenal to succeed as a starter - will be given the opportunity to do so.  Pleasant young man whom we’ve had the honor of meeting and chatting with at the complex - very athletic which has shown thru in the pitcher fielding practice drills he’s been in that we watched.  Big league stuff - just needs innings to build repetition and command.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 92 to 97 mph - max 98 ), slider ( 82 to 87 mph ), change up ( 83 to 90 mph ) and curve ( 80 to 82 mph ). 2023 Projection - either a return to Clearwater or slot with Jersey Shore out of spring camp.

Rafael Marcano - 22 years old -  LHP - Birthdate : 4/20/00 - signed as an international free agent - 4/25/18 - Punta Cardon, Venezuela - This Fan’s View -  uses a three pitch mix ( FB, Curve & Changeup ) - he’s comparable in style, delivery and competitiveness to Ranger Suarez - spent a large part of the season at the complex with the injury rehab team after initially breaking spring camp with Clearwater and pitching in two April games.  Returned to game action on June 5th with the Threshers - promoted to Jersey Shore on July 2nd - 17 overall appearances - 13 starts - 64 2/3 IP - 73 K’s - 31 BB - 5.15 ERA - struggled more with control/command at Jersey Shore which we’ve seen from Rafael a bit before when he’s moved up a notch - sometimes gets into an overthrowing pattern but then settles back into routine.  Stuff can play higher - it’s a matter of building innings and repetitions.  The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 88 to 94 mph - max 95 ), slider ( 77 to 81 mph ), change up ( 81 to 86 mph ) and curve ( 74 to 82 mph ). 2023 Projection -  a return to Jersey Shore with an eye towards Reading out of spring camp.

Brian Marconi - 25 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 5/9/97 - signed as an un-drafted free agent 6/12/19 - George Mason University - This Fan’s View - He’s not a high velocity hurler but has a cross fire delivery release point that induces swings and misses, also throws a plus curve ball.  Pitched the majority of the 2022 season at Reading - 43 appearances ( 43 2/3 IP - 18 saves in 21 chances - 57 K’s, 34 walks ) - promoted to Lehigh Valley 8/26/22 - pitched in 10 games with Iron Pigs - 3.95 ERA in 13 2/3 IP - 11 K’s - 13 BB - was an Eastern League All Star in 2021 when he posted 15 saves and a 2.27 ERA in 43 2/3 IP.  Brian battled control and command issues this past season which resulted in more walks and a higher ERA - is a bulldog - takes the ball every time it’s asked of him and battles.  We thought he was deserving of the Paul Owens Award in 2021.   Can become a big league contributor if he reels in the control/command.   The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 89 to 92 mph - max 92 ), slider ( 77 to 82 mph ), change up ( 80 to 84 mph ) and curve ( 76 to 78 mph ). 2023 Projection - a return to Lehigh Valley out of spring camp - should see some Grapefruit League game action in spring training.

Jordi Martinez - 22 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 7/18/00 - signed as an international free agent - 1/22/18 - Santiago, Dominican Republic - This Fan’s View - we first saw Jordi pitch in 2019 Fall Instructs and came away thinking “Wow” - ball seemed to jump out of his hand with a relatively short arm delivery.  He has a four pitch mix ( four seam, sinker, slider and change ) but definitely pitches off the fastball’s movement and velocity.   We see big league talent - had some arm issues and began the season with the rehab team and extended spring training - was activated on April 26th - started 15 of his 17 appearances with the ‘22 Clearwater Threshers - 72 IP - 64 K’s - 23 BB - 4.25 ERA - promoted to Jersey Shore on 8/28 and made two starts - 6 2/3 IP - 7 K’s - 1 BB - 4.05 ERA.  He’s a strike thrower - sometimes too consistent in the zone rather than commanding it - results in more hits than stuff should allow from this observer’s view - can get too finite in location rather than letting it eat - will come with more repetition and confidence.  We like the tools - has a big league look.  When it clicks - can move up quickly.   The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 95 mph - max 96 ), slider ( 79 to 89 mph ) and change up ( 85 to 91 mph ).   2023 Projection - a Jersey Shore rotation spot out of spring camp.
