I’ve entitled this series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” and will break down the presentations into defensive categories. I intend to offer notes on every player I watched perform this past season that finished the 2022 season with the organization.
The initial set of articles was on catchers - we chatted about 18 receivers and posted three articles. The next group was on Infielders - we chronicled 40 different players broken down into five postings. The third series of articles ( a total of five ) were on 36 outfielders. I will list below the article links to each of the group notes previously published if ya missed them.
The next group of articles is Pitchers - I’ll discuss 133 different hurlers broken down into twenty postings ( alphabetical order ) hopefully finishing before Christmas :

So we continue - the fifteenth article in the series on pitchers ⚾️🤓.
Thanks to Matt Winkleman ( Phillies Minor Thoughts ) for his diligent efforts in detailing most of the speed gun readings.
Jesus Querales - 19 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 2/18/03 - signed as an international free agent - 7/2/19 from Barinas, Venezuela - This Fan’s View - made the DSL All-Star team posting a 1.64 ERA in 15 appearances ( 22 IP ) converting 7 of 8 save opportunities ( 28 K’s, 9 BB ) for Phillies Red. He was added to the Phillies White roster for the playoffs and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in 3 appearances - one save - helping Team White to the Dominican League championship. He posted similar stellar numbers in 2021 - 1.38 ERA in 19 appearances ( 26 IP ) - 31 K’s and only 5 walks - converted 8 of 9 saves. Outstanding command and control - is an aggressive pitcher who attacks the strike zone on hitters - doesn’t waste many pitches. He came stateside for Fall Instructs, we saw him in a live BP - decent ball movement - puts pitches in right locations - keeps hitters guessing and pumps the strike zone. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 92 mph - max 92 ), slider ( 80 to 81 mph ), and change up ( 85 to 87 mph ). 2023 Projection - stateside - full season opening day slot with Clearwater possible.
Alex Rao - 23 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 10/25/99 - 2022 8th round draft selection -University of Notre Dame - This Fan’s View - plus fastball that can reach high nineties, pairs it with a split finger off speed pitch that tumbles. Appeared in 3 games after signing - 1 with the FCL Phillies and two with the Threshers - gave up one hit, a walk and struck out one batter. We’ve yet to see him in person but fits the current baseball mold of a big reliever ( 6’4” ) that brings the heat out of the pen. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 93 to 96 mph - max 98 ), slider ( 83 to 84 mph ) and splitter ( 84 to 86 mph ) - 2023 Projection - could break spring camp with Jersey Shore - as a reliever may advance quickly.
Carlo Reyes - 24 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 7/4/98 - signed as an international free agent - 10/8/18 - Boca Chica, Dominican Republic - This Fan’s View - pitched at two levels in 2022 ( Jersey Shore & Reading ) - 28 appearances - 6 starts - 3.54 ERA in 56 IP - 1.29 WHIP with 62 K’s and 19 walks - was really good with Jersey Shore - 2.84 ERA in 20 games - 44 1/3 IP with a 1.13 WHIP - 54 K’s and 13 walks - ended the season with the BlueClaws making four starts - the last game was his best - 5 shutout innings on September 7th allowing just one hit while striking out 8 batters - no walks. Carlo pitched successfully at three levels in 2021 ( Clearwater, Jersey Shore & Reading ) compiling 60 innings in 35 games primarily as a reliever. He posted a cumulative 2.40 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 82 K’s and just 23 walks. He’s a versatile performer who takes the baseball without question - has a four pitch mix and throws strikes - able to use all of his pitches in all counts. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 93 mph - max 94 ), slider ( 83 to 86 mph ), change up ( 82 to 87 mph ) and curve ( 77 to 84 mph ). 2023 Projection - was taken in the minor league Rule 5 draft by the Dodgers
Pedro Reyes - 20 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 11/26/02 - signed as an international free agent 1/4/20 from Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. - This Fan’s View - tall ( 6’3” ) and slender with a simple and repeatable motion - three quarter arm slot - big loop break on his curve ball - change up with down and in sink - fast ball has life - good velo which should improve as he gains strength. Came stateside for Fall Instructs Camp although we didn’t get the chance to see him pitch as camp was cut short by a hurricane. We have seen him on live stream - posted a 1.37 ERA in 7 games ( 6 starts ) for Phillies Red - 26 1/3 IP - 21 K’s - 6 walks - his second season in the DSL - posted a 2.93 ERA in 13 games ( 10 starts ) in 2021 - 46 IP - 32 K’s, 15 walks. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 89 to 93 mph - max 94 ), change up ( 84 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 81 to 83 mph ). 2023 Projection - stateside assignment - extended spring and FCL with an eye towards Clearwater full season spot.
Mason Ronan - 22 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 3/3/00 - signed as an un-drafted free agent 7/25/22 - College of Central Florida - This Fan’s View - registers high spin rates on his deliveries - swing and miss curve ball and a splitter that falls off the table with downward sink. Made 4 FCL appearances ( 4 1/3 IP ) posting a 2.08 ERA ( 6 K’s, 6 BB ). Was only a year removed from having Tommy John surgery entering 2022 - had a good season in college ball ( transferred to Central Florida from the University of Pittsburgh ) posting a 1.54 ERA and a 15.43 K/9 projection and then played in the MLB Draft League for the State College Spikes appearing in 8 games. Was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round of the 2018 draft following his high school career at Penn Cambria HS in Asheville, PA but chose college. Knows how to pitch - will need to hone in control and command to excel. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 91 to 94 mph - max 94 ), curve ( 79 to 86 mph ) and splitter ( 84 to 86 mph ). 2023 Projection - will compete for a full season roster spot in spring camp
Jason Ruffcorn - 24 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 7/21/98 - 2021 8th round draft selection - Oklahoma University - This Fan’s View - sinker, slider, change up and curve ball mix - FB can light up the gun mid nineties and has late life that jumps on hitters from a sidewinder type delivery. Appeared in 38 games in 2022 for Jersey Shore - 5.80 ERA in 45 IP, 40 K’s, 37 walks. Battled command for almost the entire season except for July when he posted a 1.29 ERA in 6 games ( 7 IP ) with a 0.71 WHIP and a .083 batting average against. Was a closer in college and pitched very well in the role. Chalk up 2022 as a learning experience - has the stuff to climb higher up the ladder. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 94 mph - max 95 ), cutter ( 86 to 88 mph ), slider ( 80 to 85 mph ), change up ( 80 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 75 to 79 mph ). 2023 Projection - a return to Jersey Shore to begin the year with a eye towards Reading else with a good camp an opening day role with Reading.
