I’ve entitled this series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” and will break down the presentations into defensive categories. I intend to offer notes on every player I watched perform this past season that finished the 2022 season with the organization.
The initial set of articles was on catchers - we chatted about 18 receivers and posted three articles. The next group was on Infielders - we chronicled 40 different players broken down into five postings. The third series of articles ( a total of five ) were on 36 outfielders. Guissepe Velasquez - 19 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 4/3/03 - signed as an international free agent 7/2/19 - Porlamar, Venezuela - This Fan’s View - Guissepe has smooth, repeatable mechanics and shows some pop, strong young man. He pitched in the FCL in 2022 - 9 appearances - 11 IP - 10 K’s, 6 walks - battled to find consistency and had some nagging injuries to contend with. The year before in the DSL put up a 2.75 ERA in 14 starts ( 52 1/3 IP ) with 56 K’s and 19 walks. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 92 mph - max 93 ) and curve ( 77 to 79 mph ). 2023 Projection - a return to extended spring training and the FCL could be in order.
Ezequiel Ventura - 20 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 6/20/02 - signed as an international free agent 8/7/18 from Maracaibo, Venezuela- competed his third season in the DSL with a 5-1 record and 2.40 ERA ( 11 appearances - 10 starts - 48 2/3 IP ) for the league champions Phillies White team. It was his first season as a starter - in 29 DSL appearances ( 12 starts ) he’s posted a 3.04 ERA in 83 IP with 74 K’s and 36 walks. This Fan’s View - The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 92 mph - max 93 ) and curve ( 74 to 78 mph ). 2023 Projection - perhaps stateside in extended spring training
Andrew Walling - 23 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 10/29/99 - signed as an un-drafted free agent - 8/1/22 - Mississippi State - This Fan’s View - appeared in 7 games after signing ( 3 in the FCL and 4 with the Threshers ) accumulating 11 1/3 innings - control and command was an issue - 9 walks but also struck out 12 batters. Andrew pitched in the MLB Draft League for Williamsport prior to signing with the Phillies amassing 11 1/3 IP there ( 12 K’s, 9 walks ). He’s from the state of Washington and originally pitched collegiate for Oregon State, he then transferred to Eastern Oklahoma State Junior College and then Mississippi State last season. He was a college teammate of fellow Phillie Christian McGowan at Eastern Oklahoma and like McGowan is a power pitcher. We met Andrew at the complex shortly after he signed - is very happy to be a Phillie and excited to get after it. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 92 to 95 mph - max 95 ), slider ( 85 to 89 mph ) and curve ( 77 to 78 mph ). 2023 Projection - will compete in spring camp for a roster spot with either Clearwater or Jersey Shore.
Zach Warren - 26 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 6/9/96 - 2017 14th round draft selection - University of Tennessee - This Fan’s View - Features a fastball, curve/slider, change up mix with swooping vertical movement and spin on the curve/slider. Zach appeared in 31 games in 2022 ( 5 with Reading, 26 at Lehigh Valley ) accumulating 28 1/3 IP - struggled mightily with control as he walked 26 batters while striking out 29. Hasn’t been able to establish the same footing at the AAA level as he’s done at the lower levels thus far. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 91 to 95 mph - max 96 ), slider ( 82 to 88 mph ), change up ( 87 to 88 mph ) and curve ( 78 to 85 mph ). 2023 Projection - will be in the mix again for a Lehigh Valley bullpen role.
Chase Webster - 23 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 9/12/99 - signed as an un-drafted free agent - 8/23/22 - Arizona State - This Fan’s View - signed late in the season - made 2 appearances with Clearwater ( 2 1/3 IP ) striking out five batters while walking two. Played for Texas Tech in 2021 and Arizona State in ‘22. A power arm and big fella ( 6’4” ) who was a high school standout for Mesquite High School in Arizona. We’ve not seen him pitch in person. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 90 to 94 mph - max 95 ), slider ( 81 to 82 mph ), change up ( 82 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 78 to 80 mph ). 2023 Projection - will compete for a roster spot with either Clearwater or Jersey Shore.
Jared Wetherbee - 24 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 8/14/98 - signed as an in-drafted free agent 7/20/21 - Elon University - This Fan’s View - appeared in 19 games ( 24 IP ) with Clearwater recording a 4.50 ERA with 36 K’s and 26 walks. Gets good movement( spin) and location - shows ability to sequence pitches and read hitters. What I found cool about Jared was how he would come to the complex to watch others perform in the FCL during mid day games even though he was with the Threshers at the time - to me it is reflective of a team oriented person and great teammate. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 87 to 93 mph - max 94 ), slider ( 76 to 84 mph ), change up ( 81 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 72 to 80 mph ). 2023 Projection - in the mix to break spring camp with Jersey Shore.
