Well we’ve come to the end - the last of 33 articles covering 227 players. I entitled the series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” and broke down the presentations into four defensive categories. Including this article we have presented notes on every player I watched perform this past season that finished the 2022 season with the organization.
The initial set of articles was on catchers - 18 receivers posted in three articles. The next group was on Infielders - 40 different players broken down into five postings. Danny Wilkinson - 22 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 10/19/00 - signed as an un-drafted free agent - 7/25/22 - Villanova University - This Fan’s View - has yet to pitch in a pro game, was shut down short term after his signing to rehab an injury however is now back working on his throwing program. I have yet to see him throw but found a report from Will Hoefer on Danny when he pitched in the Cape Code League for Harwich - “ Wilkinson is fun to watch due to a high overhead arm slot and a very unorthodox mechanical feature. Halfway through his delivery, he turns his head away from the plate, then fires it back through his finish to the plate. The stuff is unique and effective; a fastball with near perfect backspin and a big 12-6 curve in the low to mid 70s, complimented by an occasional slider at around 80 MPH. Consistency with his delivery will determine whether the premature head whack is an issue or a quirk, but this is definitely an intriguing strikeout heavy relief prospect.” From what we’ve heard and read he gets top level spin rates on both the curve ball ( 2500 to 2600 rpm ) and slider ( 2700 to 2800 rpm ) - real weapons - anxious to see him throw - expectancies are he’s going to be ready to compete fully in spring camp. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 91 to 93 mph - max 94 ), slider ( 81 to 83 mph ) and curve ball ( 74 to 77 mph ) - cape cod league reads 2023 Projection - if ready health wise will compete for a roster spot in spring camp with either Clearwater or Jersey Shore.
JP Woodward - 24 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 11/13/98 - signed as an un-drafted free agent 6/16/20 - Lafayette University - This Fan’s View - appeared in 32 games for Jersey Shore in 2022 ( 38 IP ) posting 41 K’s and 16 walks - over two seasons has appeared in 60 contests between the FCL, Clearwater and Jersey Shore. At 6’6” he uses height as an advantage with an extended release point. Great attitude and willingness to work diligently at his craft, always ready to take the ball. Had Ulnar nerve surgery on his throwing elbow in September but fully expects to be ready for spring camp - actually is looking forward to having a “clean, explosive arm for the first time since college.” We expect good things to come. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 88 to 92 mph - max 93 ), slider ( 78 to 82 mph ) and change up ( 81 to 85 mph ). 2023 Projection - should be in the mix for a Reading roster spot in spring camp.
Cam Wynne - 23 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 1/11/99 - 2021 20th round draft selection - University of Nebraska - This Fan’s View - Fastball sits generally in the 93-95 mph range touching 97 - slider and change up are primary secondary pitches - ball comes out hot and quick to the plate with decent spin rates - power pitcher. Tremendous physique. Made the 2022 opening day Clearwater roster and was excelling - 11 appearances thru May 17th - 17 2/3 IP - 0.50 ERA with 21 K’s and 7 walks - was shut down with elbow concerns and rehabbed at the Complex till returning to Clearwater on August 12th and making five more appearances - overall numbers with the Threshers for the season - 1.25 ERA in 16 games ( 21 2/3 IP ) with 25 K’s and 10 walks. He’s a young hurler who could break out in 2023 and climb quickly - looks like a big leaguer. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 91 to 95 mph - max 97 ), cutter ( 86 to 90 mph ), slider ( 79 to 87 mph ), change up ( 79 to 85 mph ) and curve ( 80 to 82 mph ). 2023 Projection - will compete for a roster spot with Jersey Shore - maybe even Reading - can be a quick riser
Gabriel Yanez - 23 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 7/22/99 - signed as an international free agent 1/11/17 - El Tigre, Venezuela - This Fan’s View - appeared in 33 games for the 2022 Threshers - 50 1/3 IP - 3.22 ERA - 58 K’s, 13 walks - 1.13 WHIP. Had a stellar month of June ( 1.00 ERA in 7 games ( 9 IP - 9 K’s, 2 walks ) and was consistently strong from April thru July ( 1.99 ERA in 40 2/3 IP ). Gets a lot of movement and spin on his pitches which can overwhelm hitters at the Low A level. He’s a multi-inning reliever with fastball generally in the low 90’s and a slider and changeup as secondaries. Attacks hitters and has shown ability to pitch multiple innings with limited rest between appearances - very valuable commodity. Also never hesitates to take the ball. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 86 to 91 mph - max 92 ), slider ( 74 to 81 mph ), change up ( 77 to 84 mph ) and curve ( 75 to 80 mph ). 2023 Projection - will compete for a roster spot with Jersey Shore.
Braden Zarbnisky - 25 years old - RHP - Birthdate : 12/26/96 - signed as an un-drafted free agent 7/21/20 - University of West Virginia - This Fan’s View - appeared in 30 games ( 43 IP - 4.60 ERA ) - 53 K’s - 14 BB - 1.23 WHIP with Reading in 2022 - posted a 0.93 ERA in April ( 6 games - 9 2/3 IP - 0.72 WHIP ) and a 0.00 ERA in June ( 6 games - 8 IP - 1.13 WHIP ). Braden rose thru the system quickly in his first year of play - pitched at three levels ( Jersey Shore, Reading & Lehigh Valley ) - good movement on all deliveries, gets after it and throws strikes, developing better command within the zone - was a two way player at West Virginia - the last two seasons are his first with a sole focus on pitching. Back end of the game big arm reliever. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 93 to 95 mph - max 96 ), curve ( 81 to 82 mph ) and slider ( 84 to 85 mph ). 2023 Projection - will be in the hunt for an opening day assignment with Lehigh Valley - should see some Grapefruit League action as well.
